Did taste it in Ciudad de Guatemala, rumhouse near the airport (zona 13) and then with ice in some bar in Antiqua, Guatemala which tasted even worse. Botran rums are way cheaper than its Zacapa competitor but sadly WAY worse in every aspect. Don't expect any real quality or charisma from their 12yo here; even same age Flor de Caňa from Nica, that I disliked, is better.
A very abundant rum, comes in multiple cask styles.
It has some flavours from Botran 18, but not that intensive.
The taste is watery, the dilution is bad. As the rum gets warmer I get vanilla, paper, some oranges, wood and tannins.
The nose is not bad, but the taste is too watery. The initial taste has almost no flavours.
In the middle I get vanilla, paper, some orange and wood with tannins.
The finish is spicy and good with orange and wood.
I would rate it with 56 points, because there is a strong problem with the dilution.
Nose: orange, wood, dry fruits, spice, flowery notes
Taste: watery start, vanilla, orange, some paper, wood, tannins
Finish: spice, orange, wood
Sweetness: 1.5/5
Fruits: 2/5
Spice: 3/5
Mildness: 3/5
Complexity: 1.5/5
Value (15€): 1.5/5
Light to medium amber in color. Strong smell of banana. Moderately creamy mouthfeel. Tastes a little sweet with some caramel. Caramel lingers to the finish after everything else has cleared out. A little bit of vegetal tobacco and vanilla. Surprisingly I don’t taste the banana that is so overwhelming when sniffed. Overall a pretty good rum.
Cardiff Rum Festival good 12 year solera well aged and a decent sipper
Nothing really special about this fellow. Had it not been for the good company and great mood when tasting it, would probably have forgotten all about it already.
To try just once, just for the shake of it, ask the bartender to perform some extra orange peel treatment on the glass before serving so that you might get close to a "decent" outcome.
Pourer said age statement is solera (sigh), so there's only trace amounts of 12 year-old juice in here. But hey, it's fine; tastes how you'd expect. It also appears to be priced appropriately, and is not as dosed as many others from Central America.
Skip it for sipping, but highly recommended as a mixer.
7-, 6+
Wasn't impressed with this bottle.Tasting it neat was not great, but it improved with a bit of water. It's quite sharp, but you are not rewarded with a nice after taste. It makes for a nice sharp Cuba Libre though, so I'll use it for mixing. I paid €19 for this bottle and at that price I guess you can't expect a real sipper, so you get what you pay for.
For the price this is a good choice for adding to your favorite cocktail. Bit of a burn and harshness going down to deter from drinking neat.
This was disgusting wow what a surprise standard and rum
Nice oaked notes, vanilla, a little chocolate.
"Quite sweet but not overly so. The finish although slightly short is nice and rounded. Again nice oak aged notes and a hearty hit of rum at the very end."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
