After a trip to the Caribbean, I decided to do some research on Jamaican rum and came across "Funky" rums. I haven't found the exact one I want yet but came across the Xaymaca and decided to give it a try.
Good golly. It stinks and is hard to sip neat.
That said... I've made my tastiest Pina Coladas yet with this stuff. Highly recommend for mixed drinks!!!
I love this rum. From my limited options I find this has more hogo than an Appleton signature but much less than a Wray and Nephew overproof. I get notes of cherry, orange, and wood. Fantastic in a Mai Tai.
Earthy notes and a strong initial taste. Very dry finish.
This is an interesting blend. It has quite a bit of the fruity and old-straw type hogo. It also has a moderate body with some vanilla and caramel flavor.
Lekker warme alcoholsmaak met subtiele nasmaak. Niet wrang maar soepel. Eigenlijk een 6,5 maar dat is niet mogelijk.
This is the tastiest rum I have sipped to date. I am not spectacularly well sampled, but have had a number of staple well rated rums, and something about Plantation Xaymaca takes the cake.
It's fairly dry, has a dark fruit tang, and a sour, earthy punch that dominates the palate. If I tried this cold turkey, I feel like I might have hated it, but in the midst of smoking others, it struck me hard and continues to do so.
At this juncture, I can't say anything more than "I'm definitely buying more of this"
A really nice spicy delivery.
"Quite spicy, quite a lot of heat – white pepper, ginger and all spice."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

There are some adjectives people use to praise rums that I just can't get my head around. The "grassiness" of agricoles and cachaças, or the "funk" of Jamaican rums.
I'm sure Xaymaca is a splendid representative of the Jamaican funkiness - but this is exactly what makes it undrinkable to my palate. I got a taster bottle for Christmas, and went through it by holding rum tastings with friends - and every time I had to struggle to get through a 10ml pour.
I'm giving it as high a score as I am because I believe this may be a good representative of a flavor I dislike, rather than a bad representative of rum at large.
