It's another Foursquare Exceptional Cask Series.
Mk VII to be precise, and the first year that two editions were released (Premise, Mk VIII), which seems to be the new norm.
Single blended, like all the others, 3 years in Bourbon casks, 7 years in Cognac.
No added sugar, but possibly some caramel colouring.
Beefy 56%
The familiar bottle, but synthetic stopper.
In the glass: Dark Amber and legs like Kim Basinger (yes, more than half is pure alcohol!)
Nose: Toffee and a clear hint of Cognac, then the alcohol pushes in, in a restrained, but "don't mess with me" way
Mouth: There is A LOT of alcohol. Aromas are of toffee, chocolate, wood and a hint of tar. They last. And last.
Throat: The alcohol is full, but not sharp or nasty. A burst of cognac reappears as it all fades to a gentle glow.
Summary: In my opinion every ECS from Richard Seale is a masterpiece. This one does not compromise or aim to please, it is a smooth beast. Personally I struggle with anything over 50%, Détente and Sagacity being my limits.
For that reason only I have marked it "down" to 8, but it is a really great rum, asking for some dark chocolate or a Lebkuchen.
Get one while you still can.
This is not the first (or the last) ECS-offering from Foursquare, that I will review. These rums have an exceptional high quality and this one is not an exception
Nose: Caramel, Oak, Leather, Prunes and a small hint of smoking rubber
Taste: Raisins, Pepper, Smoky Rubber, Tobacco and small fruity hint of apples with a lingering aftertaste
Overall: Another hit by Foursquare in their ECS-series. This one had a more complex taste then the previous ones, that I have tried. The fruityness threw my off a bit, but it worked quite well with the other notes. The ABV is perfect at 56% and it is really just a really, really good rum.
This is one of my top rums... to be enjoyed straight without rocks. This 56% is very sippable and it offers distinct cognac barrel notes and has a strong (but very delicate) oaky finish.
Everything what a Rum should be like.
The 56% dont even feel that much because the rum is that well balanced.
Zoals je van foursquare mag verwachten een mooie gelaagde rum met mooie zoete tonen van het cognac vat gevolgd door subtiele hout tonen
Simply the best rum I have ever tried.
So deep an complex,
I think most ECS I start out at 7 and this one will jsut stay there. It's quite tasty but not on the level as some of the others.
Spicy bourbon notes and firm but nicely balanced notes of zesty alcohol.
"The mid palate is beautifully spicy with a lot of lemon zest and orange peel. The spicy notes from the cask are very full and very intense."

I had a glass of this as a surprise while visiting family who brought it back from Barbados. It had more of a kick than I was expecting, and at 56% this isn't a shock! With a bit of time to air and a drop of water to temper it, it was a beaut.
