Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

Picked up a bottle of this at the Mount Gay site during a visit in the early 90's IIRC - sat unopened in my cupboard until maybe a year ago before I finally tried it. Seemed ok, less burn than I expected, less body also, but still pleasant enough to sip though better suited to cocktails - to be fair I would like to grab a new bottle to compare against as I cannot really vouch for the storage over the years.
I was surprised by the taste. It is not that great compared to Mount gay Black Barrel. Would recommend it in rumcocktails
This has to be the most flexible of all the rums from this famous distillery. Itβs perfectly acceptable neat, with a ice cube or water, it also makes a great rum and coke. Smooth, very little burn with a lasting warmth in the throat.
Uncomplicated and so easy to enjoy.
A Mt Gay staple that you can share with anyone.
Enjoy, graham.
If I had to pick a go-to for rum and coke, it would be this. Easy to find almost anywhere and a good price. It's the standard others are measured against.
Iβm usually like to sip rum and am a fan of a more flavoursome brew. This is kinda of what I expected from an English style rum, alcohol aroma with a punch in taste. But surprisingly there was some hints of vanilla on the finish and the burn went away the more I had. If sipping I would suggest on the rocks.
Would defiantly suggest as a mixing rum if looking for something cheap and decent.
Anything from Mount Gay is going to be good. This is a great starting point for people who are unfamiliar with quality rums and are looking for a good place to start.
The first time I had this rum was in Barbados on a snorkeling trip and find it quite good, so I bought a bottle. As a sipping rum goes, it ain't complex and young. On top banana and some oak. Warm body, crisp salty banana, caramel, light vainilla and some sweetness. Pleasent warm, sweet, subtle oak with light molasses finish. It serves better as a mixer and I love it in mojitos.
It is very nice standard, I would say that Mount Gay Eclipse is something you must try at least once, it may offer you another point of view on the young rums.

Great value rum.
Not the best Bajan rum but good.
Served best with ginger ale.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. Itβs just very heavy on the alcohol. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

To alcohol forward for me... Not a sipper...prefer Gosling for the price point.
