Mount Gay 1703 rum includes rums aged between 10 and 30 years that are joined by master distiller Allen Smith.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703, hence the rum's name. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Now the golden color gets more dark (compared to the lower grade Mount Gay rums). While nosing the smoky flavor is nicely smooth and elegant, a bit of citruses (oranges) is also present. In the mouth it is absolutely great and the afterburn is just so pleasant with a slightly bitter tone (thus different from the sweetened rums).
This one also has no sugar, its just pure aging to achieve such a delicious rum, that is why I give 10!
Just for sipping and relax...
This has lovely aromas and another great surprise, it's decent rum on the rocks with little added suger ... A delight to drink that could come from a pirate's rum cask ...
If you started, you drink it more and more. Soft, tasty, not too strong in flavor. Be careful not to finish the bottle at once!
Butter, caramel, tobacco, oak, plum, toffee, molasses, and ... Scotch? Yes, good Scotch. It took me a while to figure that part out. I kept tasting and trying to figure out what was it reminding me of? I knew it wasn't a common rum characteristic.(takes another taste) Yes! My mouth recognizes it, but not my nose. Odd and nice. I had thought that the difference in price from the XO to the 1703 would not be sufficient to qualify the doubling of the price, but that was wrong. This is very much its own animal.
Bought this especially for the Holidays. So glad I did. What a great experience. No additives or sugary explosions. Love everything about the taste. Molasses balanced with oak, nuts and a smidge of all spice and chocolate. Pricey but worth every penny. Sip sip sip away
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
