I could definitely smell the Vanilla when I first cracked open Admiral’s Old J Silver Rum. Which was lovely, but shame it doesn’t smell quite as wonderful as their spiced version. When I tried this rum neat, I knew instantly that this rum shares its DNA with the aforementioned Spiced Rum. They’re both sweet from that heavenly vanilla, and both possess only a mild alcohol burn, making them very easy to drink straight on the rocks. However, I did find with the Silver, that it does have a slightly bitter after taste as opposed to the Spiced. When I tried this Silver version with Coca-Cola, I’ve got to admit I was left befuddled. Yes the coke totally obliterates that mild alcohol burn and in doing so, makes this rum even sweeter. Good and good. But the fizzy dark stuff seems to accentuate the lime much more than the vanilla, (this is the part that I can’t get my head round.) The consequences of the Persian Lime being heightened for Admiral’s Old J Silver Rum, is that on the palate it’s very sugary, and in the after taste quite sour.
Sampled at Cardiff Rum Festival.
It's a lime and vanilla spiced rum with a similar profile to other rums in the Old J range mass produced and unaged. Not for me!
I think this is a pretty easy and fun drink.
Old J is very similar to the original Sailor Jerrys.
It's easy to drink with rum drinkers and newbies alike.
As the title says. Very little detail on what method they are using to remove the colour. Looks like they are tapping in the big market for flavourfull cocktail ingredient without having a "nasty brownish" presentation.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Neat the vanilla is quite strong, mixed with diet coke it's a nice run bit nothing special. Other old J varieties better.
