Canada | Flavored | 21% ABV

Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.

Currently produced in Canada, Malibu Coconut rum was originally made in Curaçao from fruit spirits flavored with coconut and rum. The original recipe was developed as a shortcut for bartenders making Piña Coladas, however today the stands on its own.

When I ran out of my first bottle of coconut rum (a gift) I went to the store to replace it. I figured a bottle of coconut rum is like any other bottle of coconut rum. Oh boy was I wrong. Awful, artificial coconut flavor and way too sweet. You can't possibly put more than a quarter ounce of this stuff into a cocktail, but why even subject yourself to that? Please go get yourself a bottle of Siesta Key or Brinley Gold Coconut. Is a 1 too harsh? Maybe, but this has no right calling itself rum.

Calling this "rum" is quite a stretch--instead it's a 42-proof coconut liqueur with some spirits added that might be rum--and I sometimes enjoy it on ice as a nightcap. I also like Mozart chocolate liqueur, Irish cream, Kahlua, and Blue Chair Bay Banana Rum as occasional nightcaps...they're flavorful, they settle my stomach and they're pleasantly calming. The Malibu is quite sweet but doesn't taste artificial. It's inexpensive and doesn't misrepresent itself...it can be a pleasing drink. It ain't rum IMO, but it's not bad for what it is.

We all know this is a liqueur, not a "rum" rum. It is very sweet and overwhelmingly coconut. It's really a matter of in what situation and with who this one would shine. If rum is beer this is a White Claw, a drink for those who like getting drunk but hate the taste of alcohol and their alcoholic friends who aren't above joining them for the ride. It's fun like cotton candy is fun, all sugar and not a lot else, but sometimes you need that sweetness in your life.

Cocktails? Yes, please. Sipping? No, thank you. Very sweet stuff, but this should not be a surprise from a flavored spirit.

Even though the total rating is low, it tastes great with pineapple juice. Not a real rum but at least it doesn't pretend to be one.

Similar to Captain Morgan or Bacardi, just flavoured alcohol if you seek to get painfully drunk.

Not so disastrous since it is very sweet and nice for some cocktails. But I have to say that I don’t consider this one a rum. There are tons of good coconut rums good for sipping. This is not one of them

In the bottle from my childhood. If this isn’t your first experience with coconut rum, then you probably weren’t born 50 years ago. Clear. Coppertone aroma. Maybe a splash of kerosene. So sweet it’s sour. Finishes with saccharine. An American Classic.
