Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.
Currently produced in Canada, Malibu Coconut rum was originally made in Curaçao from fruit spirits flavored with coconut and rum. The original recipe was developed as a shortcut for bartenders making Piña Coladas, however today the stands on its own.

Maybe this has changed over the years, or I have, but trying this again for the first time, I was kind of surprised.
I didn't find this as sweet or artificial as I remember. Also, except for a really mild, but round coconut smell and flavor, there's not much there.
It doesn't really have an alcohol burn and it doesn't taste like rum. Thicker in texture than Blue Chair Bay, which I compared this directly with, but the smell is less artificial (no really).
That said, once it was in a cocktail, I couldn't even find it, artificial or not.
Still won't buy this again, but the same goes for Blue Chair Bay.
Very sweet and coconutty which works in the right application, can put a good twist on a cocktail or two
I keep this on hand for her to mix and stay out of my favorites. Its sweet and tastes like coconut flavoring.
Malibu is always good, but its super super sugary and sweet. Its kind of like drinking a strawberrita instead of a budweiser, ya know? We all know what to expect here. Dont get me wrong, its a delicious addition to any drink needing a sweet or coconut twist, but be prepared to hit the gym to burn off all those sugars. Its also not a sipping rum or a basic mixer rum, this is meant for tropical or blended drinks, almost exclusively.
whats this doing here ?... is this even a thing still ? ,, like adults drink this ?
You can only use this in a drink. Def best suited with pineapple juice (it’s a great drink), but some use it with coke also. Not really a rum, but sure give it a go.
So although technically not a rum, it’s delicious with pineapple juice and ice. It doesn’t taste as artificial as you’d expect for the price (although it definitely must have a boatload of added sugar). It’s like eating a doughnut while on a diet on cheat day.
I'm not a fan at all, just doesn't taste very good, but I will drink if I must.

Tasted Wednesday March 27 at Laka Lono Kill Devil Rum Club coconut rum tasting.
Appearance: clear
Aroma: sun tan oil. not lotion, oil.
Flavor: tastes like bonne bell lipsmacker from the 70s
Tasting notes: true to the original advertising slogan, Malibu does indeed taste like sunshine. A very sweet sunshine. I'd probably prefer this with a cola rather than as a sipper, but I feel we need to respect the original.
