Havana Club Añejo Especial is a blend of rums aged for up to five years produced from the fermented molasses of sugar cane harvested in Cuba. The molasses is combined with yeast and water, distilled using column stills, and aged in white oak barrels.
Havana Club was founded in 1878 by Jose Arechabala and later nationalized after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

So I was at Gatwick airport wanting to buy some rum and there was absolutely nothing of interest. The only thing I could think of buying was this rum so I looked at the rating here and bought a bottle. It was crazy cheap at £17 a litre bottle. Much to my surprise I'm sitting here in Greece and really enjoying it. It's a superb rum and coke, I also don't mind it straight - the brown sugar and citrus notes are really appealing. Fabulous value for money, it's a good honest rum for my money; I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. I'm now wondering what else I might try in this range as it has piqued my interest.
Tasted thanks to the Big Kahuna who shared his bottle with me. Rich dark gold in color. Signature earthy aroma of this distiller. Unlike any of the other HC offerings in that this has a fiercely intensive Cuban rum up front flavor with a quick dry patching finish. Woody astringency without the needles. Very innovative.
As a sipper it gives a weird impression of being a higher ABV. Maybe because of the taste - tropical fruits fermented in dirty socks.
Passes as a mixer.
Yeah good but not goos enough.
Just go for a havana 7
A Havana Anejo Especial with Cola started my rum journey, which was really sparked after Don Papa 7 and later Bumbu. After that my journey brought me to more pure rums of course. But I still enjoy Havana Anejo Especial with Cola on a night out.
I had it about a year ago, so I might like it now but there was just a funk flavour possible tobacco? I didn't like.

Some oaky spicy notes.
"It’s very heavy with vanilla and the caramel and brown sugar notes are too much. The rum is quite smooth and not very rough."

It's a bit boring and uncharacteristic, but not in a bad way. Does not have any strong smell or taste, but is fantastic in both a Cuba Libre and Dark N' Stormy. It'd abit sweet by itself. This is maybe one I will keep in the fridge for cocktails, and not on the shelf.
