I am a huge fan of Mount gay, in my opinion they absolutely set the bar for English style rum production. To be the 1703 Master Select is the epitome of their line. This is my go to for any occasion. A must have for any collection.
Pour this one in a Glencairn and let it sit for a while... then enjoy.
Molasses, Vanilla, Nutmeg, Caramel and Banana all take turns on the nose.
The palate is smooth and clean with burnt sugar and spice adding to the what was experienced on the nose.
Worth the price to be in your cabinet as a measuring stick.
Un très bon ami m'a offert pour mes 50 ans de déguster ce rhum, quelle chance! Très beau rhum de dégustation mais très dispendieux..
This was literally my introduction to good rum , won two bottles in a yacht race, and finishing the second now 10 months later. This rum is really... big on the nose, lots more going on than the 12yo el dorado im tasting it back to back with. Taste, a fair bit of burn in the mouth and slightly bitter to begin with, but really smooths out with a lovely long finish making you want another sip. Is it worth the money? Dunno, it’s a bit out of my price range for regular drinking, but I don’t regret the opportunity to enjoy it.
Time has come to open one of my two bottles of Mount Gay 1703 Master Select rum. This one was bottled in 2016 (my other one in 2018) and I often wondered how it compared to the MGXO which has been my favorite rum to date (with the exception of St. Nicholas Abbey 12 year rum).
On the nose the oak is much more prominent than the XO version. So many flavours are detected with the first sip, from wood chips to honey, vanilla, caramel and citrus. This rum is slightly stronger (43%) than most rums and bites in a pleasant way at first before slowly fading away finishing with a long lasting aftertaste.
This rum is much more complex than MGXO (and quite a bit more expensive also) but definitely worth purchasing if only to experience what a true premium rum tastes like.
MGXO is a definitely a better value ($50 CAD in my area) but the Master Select version ($200 CAD) is more complex and smooth. First class Rum!
Very complex, halfway between sweet and woody. A very fine and powerful sipper that develops various flavours in the nose and in the mouth.
Too pricey maybe but it is the value of rare products.
A very very big step up in comparison with the other rims of the company.
Spare for one bottle (some others are real waste of money) before they change (very soon).
This one has a very woody nose. It has so much flavour on the tongue with a little alcohol and some nice heat. The heat lasts nicely into the after taste with a great long continued flavour That seems to go on forever. I really enjoyed this neat and look forward to trying it with ice next time. Worth the effort and money.
A nice spicy entry which is quite woody.
"The nose is full of chewy toffee, banana, caramel, brown sugar and that signature coconut."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Definitely one of the greats. Don't care what anybody else says here. The price is definitely worth it .
