This Rum has more of an alcoholic kick than I expected, but nonetheless it is a good quality tasting Rum with a nice molasses flavour and a wonderful nose of deep smoked oak. An enjoyable aftertaste finishes it off nicely. I really enjoy sipping this rum, so much so that the bottle has gone down way quicker than I had intended. I would love to try the 12 year El Dorado next.
Id say this is a pretty good all rounder. For the price, it's not amazing at any one thing, but it does OK with everything. You can sip this quite easily.. it won't be a luxurious sip, but it's definitely sip-able. It will mix well with sodas and other drinks too, it may not be the ideal mixer for that specific mix, but it will work.
It's a bit sweet, vanillas, and dried fruit but not too saturated, a bit of bite and burn. It's fair all around.
Typical demerara flavour. Strong, molases rum like taste. Caramel and woody flavour are in nice balance. Like it.
My number one go to aged rum. And for the price, there is little else that compares. Rum is my drink of choice, but I have not yet learned to review and distinguish all the nuances and subtleties. I just know what I like. And I like this one very much. I have tried nearly every El Dorado rum that I have had the opportunity to purchase.
The nose is characteristicly Guyanese, which is a very positive thing in my book. It fills your nostrils with oily leather, barrel, tobaco, sweet molasse and a hint of citrus. Love it. The medium bodied palette is smooth and lovely with notes of leather, light liqourice, molasse and a bit of oak. I find that this rum places itself very neatly between the 5 and 12 year old siblings. It feels like an uncomplicated ED 12. Easily enjoyed as a sipping rum, and a monster in cocktails like daiquiri and dark n' stormy. (7,5)
Smooth rum, tastes of cacao, burnt sugar, a little vanilla and a hint of wood. No off tastes.
I've had this once a couple of years ago and found it kind of rough back then. Not sure whether they improved the recipe (it seems they reduced the sugar content, but that alone would make it *more* rough) or my palate changed.
($33CAD) Finally got around to getting some younger El Dorados. Wanted to give it a shot because I seem to love everything I’ve had from ED so far.
On the nose, it’s that sweet Demerara sugar scent that is present in the 12,15,21. I’ve missed that smell!
On the tongue it’s much like the 12, though a lot less sweet. It’s got a bit more bite than I thought it would, and a bit less going on in the way of finish. There’s flavours of vanilla, some oak, molasses maybe even some cinnamon.
Comparing side by side with the 12, it is extremely hard to tell the difference. The 12 has a bit more pepper and spice whereas the 8 had more vanilla and fruits.
I really liked this rum!
My notes indicate a "caramel twist at the end" and a musing that this reminded me of a caramel latte. This was a strong performer for me at the Laka Lono 6/31/21 tasting, which is noteworthy because I often find rums aged past five years are less impressive.
To me, sipping this 8-year isn’t overly enjoyable - quite a tart, bitter taste shines through much more than the oak, tar, and leather undertones. The finish continues this slightly off tartness, and not in a nice way. Mix in 50% Coke and you get a much richer, caramel rum & Coke than with one of than one of the usual mixers - if you have a bottle might ask well give it a try.
It’s floral, there are notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits.
"It isn’t rough but it does have quite a spicy burn and finish. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Initially I felt like all the goodness - the depth, complexity, the dark brown sugar, strange funk - was kinda buried under too low ABV and too much column still distillate.
Now, I'm beginning to appreciate it more. The top notes are slightly grassy and subtle. The way they lift the finish and a gentle dark sugar sweetness is lovely.
Yes, its pretty sweet. Up to now, my runs have all been bone dry to balanced. This is new venture, in order to sample the Demerera style I'd heard so much about.
I like it. Happily drinking it neat, and look forward to tying out as a mixer.
