I rated both the XO and the 23 as 7's because they're decent rums but flawed, so I was shocked to find that I actually really quite liked this one. It definitely has a hint of sweetness, but in this case that actually helps bring out the other flavors. I think the XO is ridiculously overpriced, and while this one seems to sit between the XO and the 23, I think in this case the price is justified over the 23.
Hahaha, I just checked my reviews of the other Zacapa bottles. It turns out I titled this the same as the 23. Avoid the XO, it's overpriced nonsense. This is the best of the three.
Light toffee and vine aroma, smooth toffee flavour, minimal alcohol warmth, slight notes of nutmeg and aniseed, vinuous aftertaste
Better than the regular; more smoky and more burn. There are better rums out there for the same price
Wasn't sure if I should give this one a 7 or an 8. Wish they'd allow 'tweeners. Anyhow, the overall score of 7.5 is really just right. I chose 8 because it's a legitimately sophisticated rum worthy of the Zacapa name. I just think that, as the title I gave this review indicates, the compromise between classic sweet rum and bold whiskey-edged rum (of which I am quite fond, esp. the original Mount Gay XO) leaves me personally feeling like this rum does neither extremely well, though it's still pleasing enough. And being far more affordable than the Zacapa XO, it's definitely good VFM (another reason to lean 8-ward). Also, I would be remiss if I did not point out that I just opened the bottle now, for it could well be that in a few weeks or months, I'll be updating this review with a glowing report about how the flavors converged and developed into a heavenly blend. Here's hoping!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This was another Duty Free acquisition while traveling outside of the United States. I picked it up in Costa Maya for about $40 so it seemed like a good purchase. I think it will be fine to use in a rum punch or something like that, but it's not appealing to sip neat. Pretty standard vanilla notes with sharp after burn.
