I first got into rum while sailing on a cruise that had this beautiful bar called The Meridian that overlooked the aft of the ship. I stepped into the bar to attend a rum tasting that, depsite the samples provided, really broadened my mind to the origins of the distilled spirit and its global significance. The rummelier on the ship gave such a remarkable presentation that I became really attracted to it. For me, rum has so much more history than the other brown liquors. However, I'm a novice and my pallate suggests to me that I'm an "aged in sherry casks" guy much more so than I am an "aged in French oak" sort of person. I like my rums sweet, I think. And I don't believe that's ever going to change much. It's the same reason that I prefer tequila over scotch.
