Proper dark stuff which makes you think of better times in the Royal Navy where they served this rum to the sailors prior to 1970! Will kill scurvy, weevils and all other nasty irritating pests!
Copper-coloured light mahogany in the glass.
In the nose rich, heavy and complex. Hearty, earthy, vegetarian scents from the forest, wood freshly cut, sawn, waxed, rotten and covered with moss. Dark roasted caramel mixed with liquorice and refined with vanilla. There are also the overripe fruits and freshly baked rolls with chocolate sprinkles.
On the palate pleasantly warm and mouth filling. Delicate bitter caramel plucks your taste buds and makes them ready for the following flavours. Vanilla, toffee and liquorice with a big load of wood inebriated, herbs and fruits follow elegantly.
In the finish nicely long and tasty, some ash, caramel and cocoa.
A great Guyana Rum for connoisseurs and overproof lovers. Nothing for sweet rum lovers.
The aroma is very full and vibrant with soaked raisins, dark chocolate mousse, sweet pipe tobacco, cinnamon and flambeed banana. It's hard not to like that composition.
The taste is not surprisingly a bit "explosive" given the 54,5% vol. but it doesn't seem completely out of control. An intense flurry of toffee, nutmeg, ginger, honey, black tea and oak washes over the tongue but I don't feel mistreated by the strong spirit. The tingling spices linger for a good while, eventually leaving me with a warm feeling in the chest and the subtle taste of rum soaked raisins.
I'm starting to think that quite a few of the cheaper overproof rum are really good value, because you get so much taste compared to the majority of rum in this pricrange. Another great example of overproof, ridiculous value is smith n' cross.
A good solid rum
Perfect for gulpers or dippers
For the love of an old sailor
Pusser's 15 Year is in my top 10% and their navy blue label 84 proof British Navy Rum is a staple mixer. I am generally not a fan of overproof rums because the extra alcohol often kills the actual taste. This one does not quite qualify as overproof. In my bourbon days, I would drink Booker's Cask Strength neat with no problem at all, so I can handle strong burns in any spirit.
So based upon many of these reviews warning of the burn for this one, I was a bit apprehensive at first. Shit, it's only 109 proof! I would hate to see what those complainers would do with Wray & Nephew Overproof!
I poured my first sample into the snifter and sipped it neat. It is super smooth and I now rate it as the best of my "Black" rums, even though it has more of a dark brown color. If Myer's Original Dark Rum could be refined and smoothed out for harshness, it would be Pusser's Gunpowder. The added proof is just an extra bonus. Damn, this is some good rum and the story on the back of the bottle only adds to the enjoyment! Yet another gamble on a rum that paid off!
Very intense nose with ripe banana, brown sugar and mediterranean herbs. Taste: The initial sweetness turns slowly into a dry and herbal bitterness. Also a medium to long finish with banana taste. High alcohol content, nevertheless, easy to drink.
The color has a little darker shade without being in the dark rum category but the flavor is delicious. Great spice yet fairly smooth with a nice bite at the end and some oak. A good quality strong rum that’s affordable.
Very good as long as you like the bigger kick (due to 54.5 volts it has). Ahoy!!!
A strong rum (at 55%). Not for beginners. Once the strong alcohol burn passed, notes of taste and wood. One of my favorites. Hard to find.
It is fruity, hints of smokiness.
"It’s not sickly and overly spiced like some navy rums. There is a real complexity about this rum with a lot of flavour. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is another outstanding rum from Pussers. With clear molasses and woody flavors. The is an excellent sipping and mixing rum.
