I know that this has sugar in it and that accounts for some of the smoothness, but this is very, very pleasant to drink. It has a richness, a warmth and a refined medium-sweetness not unlike a good sherry. Whatever the sugar content, to achieve that level of refined smoothness takes quite a bit of quality distillation and blending.
On the nose, it's spirits, rum, brown sugar, furniture polish, caramel.
Taste wise, it glides off of the tongue with sweet molasses, fudge, brown sugar, dates, sweet figs, treacle, distilled fruit and caramel - there are also hints of liquorice and vanilla. There is the merest hint of burn - hardly there at all - but just right for a bit of warmth (but if you swallow it down the wrong way, it'll hit you like a good spirit should). I'd imagine that almost anyone who enjoys a little bit of sweetness would like it. It's certainly sweeter than a classic rum, but it is not a sugar bomb, so if you like controlled, balanced sweetness, it's a big winner.
Finally, I simply don't undertand those who say it's like a liqueur - not it isn't. Put this next to a dozen liqueurs and see how much nonsense that is. It is creamier, more viscous and sweeter than most rums, granted, but a rum it is - and a mighty fine one at that.
Easy to find, very enjoyable, slightly sweet but the sweetness mostly dissippitates if you leave it in the glass a little while, very smooth and more-ish. Bottle is always too small ;-)
(edit: downgraded to a 7 as my tasting experiences and palette have developed over time)
My favorite by far. Do not mix this Rum whit anything. Enjoy it strait on the Rocks. You will want more.
This is truly a wonderful sipping rum.
I first tried it while in Dallas on business, sitting a cigar bar. It pairs very well with a good cigar. I enjoy tasting notes of vanilla and caramel, paired with a good stick.
Because of the price, its a great first choice if you're trying rum for the first time.
Süssliche Aromen von reifen Tropenfrüchten von einem Hauch von Nüssen begleitet
It's pretty good as a desert after nice dinner. .. but impossible to sip it all night. One of the best rum liquor, it's complex, enjoyable, but sooooooo sweet.
To sweet for my taste. Very smooth and fine rum none the less.
Nice complex smell, reminds me of apricot and maple syrup. The taste is even better, sweet at the right point and with a very good finish. Paired with honey and caramel chocolate with a touch of sea salt and with a Montecristo Edmundo.
"The palate evokes chocolate sauce and the sweet toffee, fudge and tropical fruit flavours from the nose"
"The nose is dominated by notes of caramel, toffee and crème. On the back end of the aromas, I can detect a hint of smoke and pineapple"

Smells sweet. It is fruity, oranges, grapes and raisins with scents of chocolate and a sweet almost syrupy.
"The tasting notes on the site are very accurate vanilla, fudge/toffee sauce are noticeable as are notes of vanilla and a finish which is slightly bitter like cocoa which leaves a hit of oakiness on the taste buds. The finish is pretty short. ."

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

The aroma is nice, without being spectacular. It has nice touches of orange, vanilla and some cocoa. But it's the taste that then raises Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva to the high grade! It's a complex and characteristic taste of carbon, vanilla, orange and dates! Above all, it's a charcoal and orange that is still very good in your mouth!
