Virgin Islands, U.S. | Aged | 40% ABV
Cruzan Single Barrel Rum begins as an assortment of aged rums, distilled in column stills and ranging in vintage up to 12 years. After blending, the rum rests in a new oak barrel for an additional year before bottling. Each bottle of Cruzan Single Barrel rum is poured from only one barrel, which may increase color variance from batch to batch.
Cruzan Single Barrel rum is produced by the Nelthropp Family in St. Croix. The name ""Cruzan"" is derived from island's native population - the “Crucians."

Golden colour hints at it's aging length/process (not too-too long or in too charred a barrel). This rum has a mild sweet smoky scent, along with an alcohol smell. It's a fairly strong tasting rum, with a hint of sweetness, that comes with a burn, and a kind of syrupy aftertaste. Alcohol taste too strong to use as a sipper, but definitely a good aged rum.
Nothing exciting about this rum but nothing terrible. Another good choice for mixing, especially when hosting guests.
Good sipping rum that won't hurt the bank, also good for guests that cannot appreciate the top shelf rums in your collection. You know the type...has to mix it with coke and would make you a little homicidal if they reached for the good aged rum.
Bon rhum qui se prend bien avec du perrier ou cola
Lighter in color. A bit mellow on the palate but still a nice sipper.
My bottle was the older design bottle with the schooner on the front and a nice wooden cork. Straw colour , almost whisky like in appearance . A bit astringent up front but settles down quite quickly. Sips fine but has a taste i just dont recognize ? Not too sweet which is fine. This rum makes an outstanding rum'n'coke , quite expensive and hard to get in the "Land of the long white cloud".
First off, in the interest of full disclosure, my bottle doesn't look anything like the bottle pictured here although it's the same rum. My bottle, for whatever it's worth, is more short and wide with a wide opening and shoulders. Looking online there seems to be at least three variants of bottles and labels for this rum. This can be confusing. Appleton changed labels on me and I ended up duplicating rums.
But I digress...
There are brands of rum that I just don't have very high expectations. Cruzan is one of them. Mostly inexpensive rums grouped in together with other inexpensive rums of dubious quality. I decided on getting this one since it is "single barrel" and according to the label it consists of "select rums aged 5-12 years, expertly blended, and aged again in a single American oak barrel".
Wait a second....
Wouldn't that be TWO barrels?
Okay...nitpicking aside, at least they put some sort of age description on the bottle albeit to me a bit misleading. Fine print.
Anyway...I digress again...
Back to the rum.
First off the color is a beautiful deep amber. Nice aroma with a little bit of alcohol sting. The flavor starts off somewhat sweet...not too bad...I taste vanilla and butterscotch in it before the burn hits. There is evidence of the oak but not as much as I expected. Not a bad rum. So close to qualifying as a sipping rum. Maybe if were allowed to age for about 5 more years. However it is a solid mixing rum. Surprisingly good from Cruzan. Good job, folks!
My bottle of Cruzan single barrel has a warm buttery start, with as light peppery burn on the finish. pretty good at it's pricepoint
I liked this rum with cola. And a squeeze of fresh lime.

"On the nose, oak, cinnamon, vanilla, and orange marmalade appear..."
"Cruzan Single Barrel rum review by Whisked Foodie"
It’s very little and slightly floral with hints of fruit. It’s very light, pleasant and well balanced. .
"The rum is nice, it is well balanced with a nice mouthfeel. It offers little by way of alcohol burn and has a relatively long but inoffensive finish."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
