We were some friends teaming up at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm to celebrate Foursquare Appreciation Day.
We started up with tasting of the four different ones seen at the added photo under lead of our friend the Swedish importer Lars Renbjer.
The fourth out was the Sovereignty (ECS XIX) which was released on November 2021 celebrating Barbados Independence Day (November 30th), which makes the name of it understandable.
It’s a molasses based blend of pot and column still rums aged for a total of 14 years with 3 years in ex-Bourbon and 11 years in former sherry casks. Bottled at ABV 62%.
The nose is rich, nutty and fruity with aromas of ginger, varnish, coconut, oak, licorice and vanilla present.
On the palate it’s complex, oaky and fruity with recognizable tastes of nuts, pepper, leather and cigar with some hints of chocolate.
The finish is long, oaky and dry with some fruity hints.
Overall a fantastic rum described in two words, dry and oaky.

We have arrived at the Foursquare ECS XIX called Sovereignty form Barbados. The rum is a blend of pot and column style. It was distilled in 2007 and aged 14 years tropically in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It was then blended and bottled at a cask strength of 62% alcohol with no additives.
On the nose comes a recognizable Foursquare profile. But it is darker and looks more mature. Here is a lot of caramel with vanilla, spice, oak and lots of wood. Dark chocolate, nuts and a thick fruitiness. On the palate, the rum is creamy and heavy. Lots of cask influence with toasted aromas, wood and lots of spice. Mocha, candied fruit and burnt caramel. The rum is intense, dry with a full body. The finish becomes increasingly woody with roasted aromas, some pepper, caramel and mocha.
Another very good Foursquare. They are all at almost the same Level for me. Here the long storage is very clear and the barrel influence is very high. You have to like that. I think the 2007 much more balanced with it's 12 years. The sherry cask brings a lot of wood with it and the fruit influence is not that high. I like it, but the availability and prices are ridiculous so I probably won't buy a Foursquare again. Since Foursquare produces on the assembly line anyway, the 5cl are enough for me here. If you find one and you like woody rum, go for it. Great quality for sure.
Another great release from Richard Seale with amazing and distinct flavours jumping out at you and dancing through the tastebuds. Nosing of dark fruits, followed by ripe pineapple, dark chocolate, caramelised nuts and pipe tobacco. The palate is with lovely baked fruits and nuts, in a pie crust spiced with cloves and cinnamon. Top of the class for me and would be hard to stop enjoying this regularly despite it being impossible to find. Fantastic!
Wonderful mouth feel and a taste to savour...
Typical Foursquare quality with an elevated start and long finish that is more refined than the regular Doorlys offerings (which are Brilliant in their own right) I personally like to have a few drinks in each sitting so at 62% just a tad too much. Drops from a 10 to a 9.
Any ECS is a must and when the opportunity presents buy it, sell the house, the first born for it or even sell a kidney!!!!!
Currently enjoying in the middle of winter here in Oz and its a wonderful change and an easily comparable alternative to a quality Islay scotch. Foursquare mission statement was to produce a product to rival the quality Scottish whisky industry - you have succeeded in every facet.
I had the hardest time tracking down a bottle of this blend. Not sure if it was a bottle shortage or some other supply issue, but it has not made it to Florida yet as far as I can see. Luckily I secured 2 bottles on internet wines I think from California at sub $100 US. Since I have every bottle except 1 & 2 I thought I should be preemptive and secure XIX. Now for the juice, a bit darker color than some previous releases, nose typical Foursquare first sip neat hits hard at cask strength 62, depending on your experience perfection, medicine, or poison.
I prefer my rums slightly chilled with a small dense cube for second tastes and the slight cooling diluting really hits home with this one reminiscent of Emery. Anyway another big Foursquare hit just to hard to find but glad to have and enjoy.
1. I have been waiting to sample Foursquare Sovereignty and my first impression from this is the fantastic nose from this sample. I simply keep inhaling the aromas and want it to last as I only have a 1 oz sample. Just wonderful! At 62% ABV this is to be enjoyed slowly to get the full effect of this wonderful rum. I can see why most are raving about this rum, it is simply fantastic. Now I MUST add this to my list of “Rums to Buy”. Wow, this is so good!
Mr. Rumatic’s review hits the flavor notes precisely. Like many high quality extra strength rums a tich of water or a small cube expands the flavor notes. It is one of the best Ex-Sherry casks rums I’ve ever had and I try all that I can find.

Caramel, chocolate, raisins and sherry in aroma; raisins, caramel, little bitting finish; heating barrel tail.
