I had an opportunity to visit the facility in Old San Juan. They have one rum and it is really solid and versatile. The price is a little high ($64 per bottle in stores here) because of the small batch sizes. The alcohol is distilled elsewhere and brought into Puerto Rico for aging. Interesting concept but not my favorite Puerto Rican rum. I’m hoping as the company matures, the will introduce some additional variants (with more aging).
A lot of notes of caramel and sweet banana! Nice Puerto Rican rum to sip.
When I arrived in San Juan, it was still early in the day. My daughter and I decided to explore the old colonial section of the city, which is when we stumbled upon the Scryer Rum Barrelhouse. They weren't open yet, so we waited it out at a taqueria and came back.
This rum is abundantly complex and one of the first cask aged rums I've encountered that isn't overwhelmingly oaky. The floral notes remind me of walking through an orange grove when the trees are just starting to bud. Hints of coffee, mango, butterscotch and molasses.
In retrospect, had I known that this rum was only available locally, I would have bought more than one bottle to bring home. When I go back, I will be buying the maximum that customs will allow.
A little rock’s make it best. Very smooth, hard to buy because of low volume. Distillery in Old San Juan.
Great cocktails but difficult to say how great the rum was without having an opportunity to taste it neat
Unsweetened! Most rums on the market are sweetened, sugared, flavored or colored. As a rum and whisky fan, I always appreciate a rum that expresses the barrel and distillate well. Scryer does just that - a spirit-forward, full-bodied rum with characters of butterscotch, caramel, raisin and walnut over rich oak.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I came across Scryer while visiting family in Puerto Rico. You sometimes get “New” brands trying to get in the market in PR, usually a sweet flavored thing for mass consumption. This is the first time I’ve come across a “real” rum that was introduced as a standalone affair on the island (and I am regular at Bacardi Plant, Don Q Distro warehouse, and Ron de Barrilito)
These guys open a small rooftop shop in San Juan to showcase their rum. I stumbled onto them while walking around and decided to give them a try. The staff/bartenders are super knowledgeable and true pros. I had a taste of the rum on its own and then had it mixed in some of their great home drinks there (Paper Plane and CREAM as my favorites).
I decided to enter them into RumRatings so that I can keep my virtual shelf up to date and spread the word.

Using RumTaster Glass from Final Touch Glassware Company
(No Promo, I just like their glassware, you can Google them...)
Time: I usually let this sit to air out for 2-3min before drinking while agitating in the glass
Color: Light Golden Caramel Color
Aroma: Medium
Taste: Bold
Spice: Medium to High
Smoothness: First contact is harsh to the tongue, but goes down smooth. It is a good sipper for those looking for something strong. I’m tasting this again for the review while in a snowstorm (29JAN2022) Bayonne, NJ…right environment for the tasting and for warming up.
(Disclosure) I was given a bottle that was straight from the barrel, I was told it had a slightly higher alcohol level.
