The best rum I have ever tasted. Omg absolutely amazing
After growing tired of the wild goose chase to find another bottle of their Shibboleth, I read reviews for this one and gave it a shot. It has been long gone for a few months, but it was a damn close second to my beloved Shibboleth. Both are no longer available on the shelves.
Nose: Characteristically Foursquare in its soft start, and it slowly intensifies with a rich mix of coconut, old red wine, vanilla smoothie, and malted milk balls. It has a quiet warmth to it and is accented by touches of lemongrass, citrus oil, gentle spice, and faint cumin.
Palate: Equally rich yet much more intense than the nose, the arrival has oak, licorice, candied plums, and glazed donuts with deep strawberry filling. The red wine is still there, though in the form of pan sauce. Slightly oily body but is quite tannic. There's a burst of baked goods, maraschino cherries, and almost a sweet and bitter tobacco.
Finish: Lingering spice coats the tongue along with peppercorn, melted caramel, and oak. Long.
Recently I had chance for tasting evening with Foursquare rums. It would be difficult describe each of them here, also there are many reviews on web. So I leave just brief personal remarks. Sorted by my personal opinion from the best. IMHO the winner is Redoutable. Most balanced in all aspects. Second on my rating is Empery (sharper smell, lot sherry, wood and caramel) together with Shibboleth maybe the most raw (just another kind) so like the other two more. Right after those I like 2008 which seems to me better significantly then other years I have already tried (2007 or 2005). The one I miss and I'm looking fwd is Nobiliary and Dominus so I hope next time.
ECS never disappoints, Richard seal you absolute genius. The pappy of rum, a worthy title. If you see this pay the money because rum doesn't get better, my mind is blown
Smell: Very ripe and sweet. Caramel, burnt sugar, lots of dried fruits, intense barrel aromas. The barrel smells stronger than in other Foursquare bottlings. Oak, vanilla from the bourbon barrel, hazelnut, earthy barrel aromas. It's very mature and intense.
Taste: caramel, burnt sugar, dried fruits, bitter substances (tannins of the cask). The sharpness increases and the dark barrel aromas explode. Tannins appear, vanilla, lots of wood. Incredibly woody foursquare. The finish is again sweet and ripe, dried fruits, then very woody with oak and vanilla.
Aftertaste: dried fruit, barrel aromas, wood
Conclusion: a difficult case, on the one hand very ripe and sweet, on the other hand, not particularly complex, in some sections exaggerated and unbalanced. For me this is basically an undiluted version of Detente.
A balanced version of Redoutable would be Doorlys 14 and it's also the best rum of this three bottlings.

One of the best pours of my life! The taste is unbelievable. Worth every penny of the cost!
Tough job - I have to review an ECS Foursquare! Redoutable is a 14 year old rum aged in ex-bourbon and ex-madeira casks, and bottled in 2020 at an impressive 61%ABV.
On the nose there is that signature ripe strawberry note I get off cask strength Foursquare, pepper, a bit of alcohol followed by orange and sweet wine.
The palate is creamy, candied strawberry, orange, vanilla, oak and dry.
The finish is oak, almond and wine.
Another solid ECS!

Very pleasant nose, dried fruits, punch, light technical notes. Very intensive.
Slightly sweet taste, fruits again, very fruity. Extra smooth. Little bit bitter on finish. Finish is very long with interesting flavour that I cannot identify. Overall not so complex as I would expect. Excels in smoothness.
