A light woody rum, with a punch. Its spicy. Black barrel is interesting and not what I am used to from Mount Gay. I am not blown away by this. I can appreciate what they are going for, however. Its punchy, as a result the finish is not delicate. Its maybe harsher than it should be, but maybe thats the body they are going for. Mount gay has been experimenting, this and their 1703 master select show this. But like that, this isn't for me. Along with the profile of this rum and the roughness in its body. I have to give it an average rating.

I cant drink that. Really. Single or with cola this taste like shieeet! I love Pirate rons smells like carmel & barrel with spices. Black Barrel - I thought this ron will be based at black pirates barrel taste. This is pharmaceutical taste of vodka with colour... I never drunk shieeet ron like this. Even Capitan Morgan Shieeet Black Spiced wasnt Shieeet like this.... If you are a pirate... dont buy this! You will be trully dissapoitment!

Was a little disappointed by this one and so for the price would just stick to regular mount gay as it is a great sipping rum for a decent price.

I tried this rum on a whim and am pleasantly surprised by how unique the taste is. Given the price point I would say excellent value for the dollar, even though in Canada we get raped on liquor taxes which makes it more that probably anywhere else on the planet..

We "kregen" een fles van een vertegenwoordiger toen we in een restaurant zaten en aan de praat raakten over drank ;). De rum drinkt makkelijk en is niet al te scherp maar mist een beetje de zoetigheid die ik in een rum zoek.

There are a few rums that I purchase repeatedly. This one has moved to the top of my list based on taste, smoothness, character and price value.

Just an every day rum in my opinion although i must admit in taste much better that captain morgan basic dark rum.

This is hard to score because there are many rum drinkers who will rightly love this and others, like me, who find it not quite their favourite style. It's certainly very well-crafted and a succesful rum for what it does. There may well be, understandably, some polarising of views on it here.
I am not a fan of whisky and only fractionally more so of bourbon. I find them both quite harsh (the cheaper ones like paint-stripper) and I don't much care for being hit over the head with too much oak, smoke, earthiness or burn. However, even on the first sip this is not too bad, and as I've drank it more, I've started to like it more. It is certainly complex and strong in aroma, taste and aftertaste. I much prefer it to all the whiskies I've tried. Plantation Guyana and Appletons 12 are also a bit like whisky, but not as good as this - this has more layers and nuance. You can not only taste the oak and the bourbon, but you can taste the rum, the charred barrel, the molasses and whole lot more.
I like it more every time I try it, and although it will never quite join my favourite sippers due to that underlying whiskyishness, I like to have a bottle of it in the house for a change in tone.
I also offer it to friends who like whisky or bourbon.
If I loved whisky I'd give this a 9 or 10. As it is, it's a 8 for me: it's not the rumiest rum, but it is really good and an occasional joy.
