Real McCoy Single Blended 5-Year rum

Real McCoy Single Blended 5-Year

Barbados | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still

The Real McCoy is a blend of rum produced from the distillation of blackstrap molasses, using a combination of both column and pot stills. The rum is aged for 5 years in Kentucky bourbon barrels, then blended with Bajan spring water.

The Real McCoy rum's heritage is based on the story of Bill McCoy, the pioneer rum runner of the prohibition era. McCoy fueled the Roaring Twenties by delivering over 2 million bottles by sea to New York speakeasies. He became well known for always delivering undiluted alcohol, unlike other rum runners who cut the liquor with prune juice, wood alcohol, or even turpentine, That is why he and his product became known as "The Real McCoy."

Capitalism has gone so far wrong if this can be found online for five quid more than Diplomatico Mantuano would be in a supermarket.

How have we built a society that values stuffing sugar in over flavour? I enjoy a pudding every now and then as much as anyone, but something is skew whiff here.

Very delicious rum, caramel, hint of spice. Curious apple hint. The other reviews are right, it is a bit bourbon.

Great rum for someone new to the spirit. I say this because the flavor profile is very simple and basic, and it is quite smooth and not overly aggressive with burn. Flavors of oak and brown sugar come through for me with the oak lingering on the palate following deglutition. I'm actually a bit surprised with how simple the profile is given the 5 yr aging, comparing it to other 5 yr aged rums like plantation barbados 5 whose flavor I find more bold relative to this. Given its simplicity it would be a good addition to any cocktails that call for a lighter rum such as a daiquiri or el presidente, however would be lost in cocktails that demand a more bold rum whose flavors are meant to pull forward to the front. Given the simplicity of the profile and $30 price tag, I would say better off going with the plantation 5 yr for a couple dollars cheaper, it's just a better rum. OR splurge an extra 10 dollars for the much more robust and complex McCoy 12 yr if a more advanced rum drinker that desires more complexity from a sipper. I think the script that accompanies the 6/10 rating here explains it best, this rum is tasty, but not quite great.

Sampled at Laka Lono April 4, 2021, a fine Easter treat.
This rum has flavor upon flavor.
The nose is vanilla, and among the many flavors are both birthday cake and butterscotch.
7/10
EDIT
Also tasted July 3, 2022 at Laka Lono (the Laka Barrel)
Notes: Medicinal nose, orange toffee flavor.
5/5 raises rating here to 8/10

Very smooth mouth and throat feel leading into a short warming finish. Dry and bland with almost no discernable flavors (maybe some vanilla sugar??). I can't find the flavor anywhere. Maybe it's just my palate. Still sippable because of smoothness and not being to sweet. I think there are a lot better offerings out there for the price.

Update 2 months later: Still not tasting anything. There's to many other rums with flavor out there. Dropping to a 5.

Good rum for the price and age. Lots of oak and spice, definitely a bourbon drinkers rum. I prefer Angostura 7yr though.

This was the Laka Lono Special Edition single barrel served at Laka Lono. Dark amber with caramel aroma. Mild sweet with a finishing pepper bite. This was actually better than the 12 year version.

I like the flavor as a sipper but it seems very light. This is a top shelf mixer for me.

This is my go to rum when I run out of my favorite ( in my reviews soon) as it mixes well and adds to but doesn't take over my rum based cocktails. Not sure it's worth the price but I will continue to keep it in stock.

un produit dans la lignée des rums britanniques mais trop cher
