Is Gosling's Black Seal 151 discontinued? What else is going away?
I went to Total Wine and More today because they were supposed to have Gosling's 151, something needed for some Trader Sam's tiki drinks.
It's rated well here, so I figured it was worth it. I found out I had to drive another half hour to reach a store that had these in stock and they wouldn't deliver from so far away.
The local store told me it is discontinued and when the inventory is gone, that's it.
Is this true? I've missed the original Florida Only Version of Bacardi's Havana Club, I do like Captain Morgan Black as well. I'm not sure I want to find out I like Gosling's 151 only to have it disappear.
Anyone know if this is really going away?
Anyone know any other discontinued rums that are worth trying before they're gone?
So the distant store was sold out today and I drove 20 minutes the opposite direction to a place that had 8 bottles and no standard proof. Their explanation was they had a few customers that bought it regularly and it was only a couple dollars more expensive. They saw no reason to keep the 80 proof version in stock.
I was also told they are readily available and not discontinuted... like Don Q's 151(!?)
Stopped at another store on the way home that didn't deliver, so I didn't know what they had... oh they had a bunch of Gosling's 151 as well and much closer.
Also stopped at two more stores for specific items. Happy Tiki Day to me:
SHRUNKEN ZOMBIE HEAD (Original Version)
“Every time business shrinks for our favorite head salesman he celebrates with one of these supernatural potions.”
Eventually renamed just ‘Zombie’ and changed to more closely match Don The Beachcomber’s original classic tiki drink. Menus suggest this version was never on the menu at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto. When ordered, shrunken head decorations would glow and cast members made ghostly noises while swinging tissue ghosts on rods and strings.
A strong drink containing an 8-year aged Puerto Rican Rum, an 8-year aged Jamaican rum and a dark overproof rum from Bermuda.
· 3 oz. Zombie batch
· ¾ oz. Bacardi 8 (Reserva Ocho)
· ¾ oz. Appleton Estate Reserve 8-Year
· ½ oz. Gosling’s 151 Black Seal Rum
Garnish:
· Orange wedge
· Maraschino cherry
Combine all ingredients in a shaker half filled with cracked ice, shake, and strain into a highball glass or tall tiki mug half filled with ice. Originally served in a shrunken head mug.Spear the cherry and orange wedge with a bamboo toothpick and place on top.
ZOMBIE BATCH
Reduced sized batch. Makes about 3 drinks.
· 6 oz. Orange juice (no pulp)
· 6 oz. Sour mix
· 3-3/4 oz. Orgeat syrup
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Reserve for making the Shrunken Zombie Head.
Note: Homemade sour mix can be created with 2 oz. Lemon juice, 2 oz. Lime juice and 2 oz. Simple syrup.
My local TWM used to have it, but not at the moment. They do have the 2 x Family Reserve expressions along with Black Seal, no 151.
I'll be disappointed if it's discontinued. It's an awesome cheap mixer.
Edit: still widely available in Maine.
