My top 6 rums rated 8 or higher that cost $30 US or less
There has been much discussion on this forum about high price equating to hiqh quality. This is clearly NOT the case, as shown by these six rums that all cost $30 US or less and all have my rating of 8 or higher. To me, this is what the rum journey is all about!! I will take dozens of these rums over another wasted purchase on Diplomatico Ambassador or another Caroni!!!!!
Blackwell's Reserve, Plantation OFTD 138 Proof, Hamilton Florida Rum Society 90 Proof,
Rum Fire Overproof, Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican, Clement Rhum Select Barrel
And now I add El Dorado 8, my top ranked rum at my 7 rating (because it is not a sipper).
Good rums and all of them are natural, I would also add El Dorado 8 -> Demerara and Holey Dollar Gold -> Fiji.
Pity you don't like the Velier Caroni 2000. You could have sold it for $ 800 and bought a lot of those bargains.
I, just as you Paul thinks it's great to find cheap rum that tastes great.
I've just tasted 3 of those you mentioned, the Rum Fire, the Smith & Cross and the OFTD. But it's just the Rum Fire that's on my list. The Smith & Cross I've rated 7+ and the OFTD 6+.
It's quite hard to find rum in this price segment in Europe that I rated 8 or higher.
I rate Agricole Blanc between 50 to 60% very high and the two highest rated I've tasted so far is:
Pere Labat Blanc 59 (9) and Rhum J.M. Blanc 50 (8). Another white rum on the list is Rum Fire (8+).
Aged rum on the list is:
English Harbour 5 (8) which is possible to find below 20€. Next one is Clarke's Court Old Grog (8+) from Grenada. The last one is Captain Bligh XO (8+) from St. Vincent that's sold as Mutineers Gold in the US.
Well done, Paul. Lots of great rums here for less.

I should have included El Dorado 8, but since it is always my top ranked rum at my rating of 7 because it is not a sipper, it got left out. I always keep these on hand because it is the main ingredient for my Caribbean Cofee (3 TBS ground Central American Arabica Dark Roast to 2.5 cups of spring water). Then I add Demerara Sugar, creamer, and ED 8. No other rum makes a perfect Caribbean Coffee.
As for that Caroni Velier 2000, it is not available anywhere near me. And if it was and I bought it as an investment (like a total fool), it is illegal to ship out of my state. Fools and their money soon part. Over here in the USA, we have lots of idiots, but very few fools. That bottle would still be stashed away in the back of my cabinet and lauging at me for buying it. I bought my only bottle of Caroni a few months ago for $190. A nearby store has another bottle for $219 and it is still sitting there many months later. Not many fools in these parts. It must be tough living in your fairy tale kingdom. Reality slaps us in the face quite often over here.
I thought the Caroni 2000 was the bottle you bought for $ 190. I saw it on a photo. Here is the US version:

If you can buy another one, why not?
We say USA is the land of unlimited possibilities. But there seems to be some problems with limited rum.😆
Paul, if you bought this bottle for 219 USD, travel to Europe to hand it to rum auctioneer personally, sell for some 800 GBP and return to your place by plane, you would still have some 100USD profit left in your pocket from this rum flip. Doesn't seem too foolish from my perspective.
It's possible to ship from another state to EU or through retailers. If you are not a fool you can find a way. 😉

That is a lot of damn trouble just to make a lousy $100 profit!!! Plus, I let my passport expire in 2001. I went on a cruise in December of 1992 whereby I was one of the few passengers aboard from the USA. The Dutch passengers were among the nicest folks that I ever met. The German passengers were among the rudest that I met with all of them cutting in line for everything. The Swiss just seemed clueless. That trip was my inspiration to never go to Europe.

Yes, I could set up a new mailing address 200 miles to my east in Florida, but what is the point? After four years, rum running now seems so quite ridiculous. I am no longer obsessed with rum.
