Best rum $200 or under
In your opinion, what is your best bottle of rum in this price range? Over the years, I have tried 120 bottles of rum and I have my favorites. However, I’m interested to pick the brains of this rum community to see if there are some bottles I haven’t thought of. Cheers🥃
I think you can still get Royal Navy Tiger Shark and El Dorado Skeldon under 200 USD. These are my two favorites
The most that I ever spent for a bottle of rum was $231 US plus tax for a bottle of Diplomatico Ambassador. I see that you have it ranked at the top of your cabinet. My bottle started out with a 9 rating and slowly slid down to a 6 because of the excessive sherry casking. The next most costly was $190 for my only bottle of Caroni. Both bottles are now deceased.
My all time top rum is Foursquare ECS Shibboleth. It is my second bottle and I refuse to open it until another bottle is found. However, a newcomer to SE Louisiana is from the Dominican Republic. It is E. Leon Jimines 110th Anniversary. It was designed for cigar lovers but it is so smooth that I am now on my fourth bottle at an $80 US minimum plus tax.
National Rums of Jamaica Long Pond 2005 13year STCE is a fantastic bottle that might have escaped your notice. Mid-high esters, and a different spin than the Hampdens and Worthy Parks.
I would second the nomination of Velier Tiger Shark as well.
Latin styled it's Zafra 30 and Havana Club Union.
British styled it's Appleton Joy, English Harbour 1981 and St. Nicholas Abbey 18yo.
About Agricole it's Clement XO (Old bottle), Depaz Cuvée Prestige, Montebello 14yo and Reimonenq RQL.
You should know that most of them costs more than 200 today if you find them, but I have paid less than 200.
There is no such thing as "best rum". But I think in terms of quality and value for money "Sassafras" was a good choice. Generally the "best rums" most likely are those which you can't find anymore at the primary market after a short period of time.
@Toni
i don’t believe in the idea of a “best rum”. However, I do believe that their are better choices in a given price range. Our virtual rum rating cabinet is an example of that based on our personal taste.
I would go for independent bottlings from your favourite distillery. For example, a Foursquare from Velier or some single cask.
All other suggestion from the others are great.
