Im trying to decide between buying Abuelo Centria or Rhum J.M. 1998. In your opinion, which one is better?

RumGuy! Sorry, can’t answer that cause I haven’t tasted that one. But those I’ve tasted haven’t disappointed me, so it’s because of that I recommended the JM. I’m sure 1998 is a great Rhum. I’ve tasted the VSOP and the ones on the added picture.

@Stefan How much better is the Rhum J.M. 1998 compared to the X.O.?

@RumGuy The Centuria is probably the best Abuelo, but I hardly think it’s worth the money for me that not fancy the sweet rums very much anymore. But I still like Zafra, so who knows, I might like it. I will not hesitate to taste it if I get a chance, but I will not buy me a bottle cause I think it’s too expensive to take a chance on.

@Stefan I had Abuelo 7 and it was ok. I figured that the Rhum JM would be a better choice. Its cheaper too.

For me it’s quite easy, cause I would not even consider to buy a Centuria. I have tasted some Abuelo’s over the years, but has only bought one bottle of the 12yo in my sweet heydays and didn’t like it even then. So even though I haven’t tasted the Centuria, I chose the JM that never has disappointed me.

@kudzey At my present stage of rum drinking, my only preference is not to drink a sugarbomb. I like a rum that has complexity, tells a story with its taste profile, and is worth the price i paid for it. Today i bought two bottles of Rhum JM X.O. for $60. Ill probably try the 15 year next.

I’ve had the Jm 1999 and Ron Abuelo Centuria and they are both excellent but not the same. Ron Abuela is sweet and smooth and easy to drink at 40% while the JM is sweetish and smoothish at 46%, but the JM has much more depth and is much rarer. I can only guess that the 98 in which you are referring is similar. Personally I’d go with the JM because the Ron Abuelo will be easily available in the future. Good luck with your decision. Cheers!

These are essentially different, depends on your preferences. For example I try not to waste a good agricole on myself, I just don't enjoy them. Or maybe I haven't tried a good one yet?

JM 1998 vintage? It's more interesting than Abuelo. I tried the JM 1993 already, it's a very good agricole with heavy aromas.

Panama molasses rum vs. Martinique Agricole rhum. I prefer hearty rum in the wintertime, Agricoles in the summer. I tried none of them, but I would prefer the J.M. In the end it is up to your personal preferences.
