Latin solera versus British true aging

I don’t have that many solera rums in my bar anymore. Those that remain are all from Oliver & Oliver, QRM30, Opthimus 25 (Port & Whiskey finish), Unhiq and Cubaney 25-30. They are all quite sweet, but I like them nonetheless. Some other non solera Latin favorites are the Ron Zafra and the Malecon Rare Proof series, the latter are also quite sweet but the high alcohol content of about 50% balances up the sweetness in a good way. Having said that, I still have to say that if I have to choose between Latin style and English style, it will be 9 times out of 10 the English style. English Harbour from Antigua is a favorite, Sunset from St Vincent another and Clarke's Court from Grenada a third. In addition, I basically like all rums from Jamaica and Barbados.

I think that's what's exciting about the single casks or limited editions. Sometimes there are only 150 bottles and when the last one is finished this rum will only exist in memories. That's also happened to Gardel or to rum from the Rockley Still (Barbados). I'm not sure if Dictador 20 (Solera Rum) still has the same taste. A new bottle tasted different to me. I found an old sample and I'm going to do a side by side tasting at the weekend. Sometimes strange barrels are also made at Solera. Zacapa sorts them out and turns them into special editions. The 2014 rum was a bit unusual. You can try another releases from Foursquare, the 2007, 2009 and Doorlys 14 are very nice.
