Plantations high quality rums

vom1011: The Plantation Guatemala XO is nowhere to be found in my area. Actually, the only bottle that I had was bought at a favorite liquor store 200 miles away as the only bottle. My days of driving that far to get hard to find rums are over with. Of course, those gorgeous beaches was my real excuse to make that trip. I have only come across one bottle of Dictador Perpetual and have never seen it for sale again near where I live. So I can't answer your question on that one. Their Insolent pops up fairly frequently for sale, so I have been through about three of those bottles in the last two years. I have noticed no taste differences in the Insolents that I have had. Dictador takes these rums out of the barrels at a certain point and then chars the barrels again before putting the rum back into the fresh char. Knowing this, I would guess that it is remarkable how they achieved consistency in their Insolent. This process is also responsible for removing the coffee notes found in their Dictador 20.

Some weeks ago I bought a new bottle of Perpetual and the taste was different than in my previous bottle? Have you buy a new bottle and notice a difference?

vom1011: I have taken chances on five of these special Plantation bottlings over the years. Only one wound up being exceptional, which was their Guatemala XO with aging in amburana casks. However, when I returned to stock up on more, they were all gone. On the flip side is their Xaymaca. One should never age Jamaican funk in former cognac barrels. The two are a match made in hell. That one only rated as a 5 and I was glad to finally get it out of my sight. Another one of their good ones is the very pleasant Trinidad 2009, which I rated at a 7. Two more are not recommended, with both earning my rating of 6. They are Guyana 2008 and Panama 8 Year 2017. With each new rum that I try for the first time, I only buy one bottle. If it warrants repeat purchases, I usually can go back for more. However, for these special releases from Plantation, that is not always possible since only the turkeys will still be available months later. I would never take chances on those and buy two bottles up front without knowing if I would like them. I would have been so sorry if I had taken double chances with their Xaymaca.

I’ve tried both Plantation Overproof and Plantation 3 Star and they are a must try for sure, and they are not too expensive either for what they are
