The rum comes from South Africa and the entire production is entirely handmade. The rum is produced by pot distillation without the addition of any additives or colouring agents. It is a rum made directly from the juice and not from molasses. The aging process is very interesting, because the rum is not aged in a traditional wooden barrel, but in glass demijohns to which wood shavings are added. The rum is then decanted into classic casks, where South African whisky has previously been aged. I haven't found the total length of maturation anywhere. The rum is bottled at 43% ABV.
Bottle: Prism shape
Colour: Gold
Nose: Reminds me of the proverbial Jamaican fruit-ester funk. Overripe bananas, apricots, liquorice, olives, a bit of technique (fumes, diluent).
Mouth: It's kind of bittersweet, but again, strongly fruity. I smelled again overripe bananas and apricots, a mix of fruit spirits, sweet wine, salty olives, a little smoke and wood.
Finish: Long.
Conclusion: So it's quite a flavour whirlwind. I think this distillery has a future and I'm looking forward to their other rums. As a lover of Jamaican rums, this style really suits me. I have to say, I honestly don't understand the low rating for this very good and relatively inexpensive rum.
Rating: 9.5/10
Nejslabší Mhoba, ale i tak to je velmi vydařený rum. Umírněnější, ale pořád trochu funky styl. Rum na celý večer. Domů si ho nepořídím, ale když je možnost tak si ho vždy dám rád.
By far not the same flavor as great Mboha Strand French Cask and way less funky than blue Mhoba Strand or white High Ester. At 43% boringly :) weak alcohol, too.
The smell is nicely sweet (vanilla, fruits, wood), the taste is quite well balanced - wooden, little bittery, little sweet. There is nothing wrong with the tones and rummakers here found some good balance. Probably both fruity and peppery (smoke, wood) tones are being present, along with obligatory overriped fruits. The taste is still quite unique but there are likely quite similar rums born somewhere else in the world. Waste of time to say I disliked it at first sip :)
Overall not so special and little bit boring when compared to other 60%+ Mhobas. Probably a decent "Mboha Gateway Rum".
Given the highly individual character of each Mhoba rum you have only chance and that is to taste it on your own and make your own judgement (preferably in the end of the bottle, not just a funny tester).
As I find pretty usual for all Mhobas, I started to accept this rum around the end of the bottle... :)
Chuť: Med a koření
Dozvuk: Karamel, lehce opálené dřevo, krátký
Sladkost: 1/3
Ochután vzorek
Opět velmi zajímavý a originální zážitek. Voní velice hezky, chuť a dozvuk trochu jednodušší.
Apocalyptic demonic flavours. You will need 3 rounds of exorcism and holy water if you try gem. Just kidding, blenders would say, that this is not for everyone.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Mhoba rum, with its Jamaican "funky" spirit, is made from pure fresh Nkomazi cane juice grown at the Mhoba Sugar Estate in South Africa. The distillates come from unique stills built by Robert Greaves, the founder of the brand. The rum is aged for the first time in large glass bottles with pieces of American white oak cut and charcoal burned at the distillery. The rum is then transferred from these "glass barrels" to former South African whisky casks for a second ageing process that will reveal all its gourmet and intense woodiness
