Bottle: Normal bottle, nothing fancy 0,5/1
Colour: Dark amber
Aroma: Some vanilla. 1/2
Taste: Nice and smooth. Something fruity in there. Maybe too sweet for me. I don't recall much difference from 7yo 4/5
Aftertaste: There is something I don't like 1,5/2
With this rum and probably whole Abuelo collection I have problem - sometimes I really love this rum and sometimes I have to force myself to finishing the glass. I assume it depends on my mood and what I have eaten that day but still I never know what to think about these rums.
8:On the nose, this rum reveals pleasant aromas of smoke, dried fruits, gourmet caramel, milk chocolate and roasted wood.On the next step, there is tobacco, bitter orange, sweet yellow fruits by bourbon ageing and some sweet spices, perhaps some vegetal notes... Nicely balanced.
Aeration brings out notes of nuts (hazelnut), maybe nougat and green pepper, as it becomes a bit dry, with a pinch of perfume, after some rest, there is ripe, maybe candied banana and some tea notes!
7,9:On the palate, the attack is supple and even slightly sweet with dried fruits, then come gourmet caramel, nuts, nougat, if we put them together, this would make toffee, some coffee and sweet spices .It is simple, but pleasant, however and round.
7,9:The finish is caramel embelished that has followed us throughout the tasting, a bit dry, the woodiness comes back, as tobacco and nuts, dried fruits, as sweetness abates, complemented with a whiff of smoke.
Looking at some reviews, maybe I have some late version of this rum, as it is not so damn' sweet. I like it, as I don't drink, prefer sweetened rums for quite some time.
Exactly! After Abuelo 7, I was looking forward to try this piece. However, it is not what I expected. It is better on all senses but not enough.
Light brown color and sweet woody scent, excellent. The taste seems to be similar to Abuelo 7, little more of sweetness. The price is 50% more so I naturally expected adequate increase of joy. Nope.
If I compare it to Diplomatico, the golden standard according my opinion, where the difference between Mantuano and Reserva Exclusiva is really big, Abuelo 7 and 12 are much less in contrast.
I mean, it is not bad rum at all, but not for 32EUR. Sorry.
Benchmark for sipping rum. Smooth, sweet, complex, and well balanced. Outstanding value.
Discovered this on a trip to Panama City. An inexpensive good sipper.
If you tasted the 7 year old one and drink this one you might think: Yup, it needed longer to sit in the barrel. Absolutly smooth and no burn, tastefull and not to sweet. Also the value you get for the price is downright criminal if you compare it to others in its league.
While it’s not a bad rum, the smell burns from alcohol and it’s wuite sweet. Personally I think there are better options for this price tag.
