Still on qurantine, still alive.
Trying two not expensive and not too old drinks side by side: Bacardi 10 vs Porteno 8.
Firstly B10. Strange etanol on the nose. Seems does not evaporate in a while. Pretty smooth on the palate, but again the same hint of the alcohol bites and ruins the taste. The aftertaste is the best part of this exercise.
Then there was P8. Light and semi sweet. Again, nothing special in the taste, but it is simply more attractive and fine.
So Bacardi 5.6 - Porteno 6.5
For an aged Bacardi it's not terrible, just not what I was looking for in an aged rum. Slight alcohol nose at the start, sweet flavor and minimal burn, and lingering sweetness with some oak at the end. Try it and see what you think.
I'm surprised this bottle doesn't have a higher score. First sip I kinda held my nose thinking it was gonna be comparable to the bacardi 8 year. This rum is insanely smooth. Really good taste and right after you swallow it it;s gone like it was a sip of water. I can see people not liking this rum for that reason, it doesnt leave a nice big sticky flavorful aftertaste in your mouth, but I wouldnt hold it against it.
I have used this in cocktails that call for an aged rum and it does well, though it doesn't work in everything. In something where it can shine as the star it falls a bit flat. Making a daiquiri with this rum + demerara syrup is a big disappointment. (where other aged rums make for a very delicious daiquiri... the daiquiri is what I use to try out rums)
7,8:The nose immediately takes on concentrated American oak, with some bourbon aromas. The white wood is justly toasted, gripping the nose just enough to deliver a intensity of vanilla and coconut.
Aeration reveals a slightly lighter rum, with some pale fruity notes. The wood is toasted, with floral notes.
7,5:On the palate, the rum is both savory and light, with molasses in the typical style of Cuban tradition. The American oak barrel delivers all it can of gourmet notes such as vanilla, coconut and sweet caramel. Yet the texture remains fluid and light, the rum lightly tingling the taste buds with spiciness.
7,5:The finish brings us closer to a more strongly toasted oak, then going deeper into its molten fiber. All is well balanced and smooth.
This rum is really smooth. You get a bit of burn, but not too much. The smeel is sweet and oaky. Taste is full. Warm. Dried fruit and vanillawith a bit of oak. It pours very good through your mouth. Not bad
I didn't quite know what to expect, because I'm mostly used to the cheaper cocktail mixers from Bacardi. This one did however not disappoint in the least! Very smooth, caramelly, sweet taste, even though it has zero added sugar. I enjoy it alot bot neat and on the rocks, very nice for sipping.
There is a slightly alcoholy aftertaste I don't quite enjoy, or else I might even rate it higher!
This is purely speculatory of course, but I feel if this had slightly higher proof, it might also be even better.
Drinkt prima weg. Smaak is goed en ligt zacht in de mond.

Nice smooth drink with robust flavor of the park aging.
