Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

When I study a distillers portfolio I usually go from the bottom upwards but for several reasons I first tried the XO, followed by the Black Barrel and ended here with their basic Eclipse. Operates at the same level as Cockspur's 5 star for about the same price. Basic barbadian rum without additives; little complexity and not great as a sipper but perfectly doable.
Vanilla, a lttle oak, spicy banana, smoke and maybe some pineapple, that is what I get. Not in the most refined form and not that entertaining, though I like the stronger pot still influence compared to Cockspur's basic rum. Especially in the 1L bottle the price is its strongest point; I would give it a 6.5 but add half a point for this quality at this pricepoint. But it is not great; just a well made but basic rum with a nice little pot still bite.
I will order this with no regrets when out for dinner. Makes a great Dark and Stormy and far outranks that swill that the majority of restaurants stock- Meyers. If they got both, grab the Mount Gay. If they only have Meyers, have an ice water instead.
Harsh compared to other runs of similar price. I would not drink on the rocks unless in a bind. Fairly harsh alcohol flavor. Good for mixing but not worth the price. Rated 3/10 because it is more expensive than better rums.
Drank this when learning to sail. Mount Gay is why I fell in love with rum.
My third bottle of rum ever. I did a bit of a mistake having XO first (which I loved) and Eclipse after so I was quite dissapointed. Even I prefer to sip this one is rather for mixing with coke. Still not a bad rum. Pale color, strong taste.
On the nose: molasses, sweetness, some honey with spices and oak, subtle nuts and chocolate, alcohol, overall pleasantly mild.
On the palate: sugar cane, spices, some nuts, brown sugar, pleasantly strong.
In the finish: oak, spices, molasses; long.
It’s a decent quality with a predictable spiced flavour. Perfect for anyone who wants to try rum. Nothing unique or interesting about it
I've found that this doesn't bring a ton of unique notes to the cocktails it's in, but it isn't bad. A bit of vanilla and molasses, but definitely dry. Not a good sipper.
I’ll order this one sometimes when the pickings are slim. Probably not bringing a bottle home though. Tasty enough when mixed into a nice fruity libation.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. It’s just very heavy on the alcohol. ."

Simple, smooth, good price for a home 'rail' option for batch cocktails, or a base/mixer for the more overpowering rums in a cocktail.
