An adequate white rum and certainly much better than a white bacardi. Has a complexity and sweetness the cheaper white rums lack.
It is barely on the edge of a sipping rum (still sipable, though) as it has a bit of bitter after taste, but it is a much better mixer for a higher-end cocktails...it is far smother than the $15-20 white rums and its flavors will not overpower a cocktail
I do not like Diplomático Planas at all. In fact I’d say it’s bloody horrid! For starters it’s too strong for my liking (47%VOL.) Neat the taste is non-descript, and is incredibly brutal in the finish. It’s like drinking a glass of fire! Things don’t really improve much when mixed with Coca-Cola either. Yes of course it becomes easier to get along with when mixed with coke, but it still tastes rather bland. I’d say Diplomático Planas tastes a little bit like Reserva Exclusiva but nowhere near as good. The only positive I can say about this Planas, is that at least I can use it as a base rum in cocktails that I wish to create. In fact for cocktails this rum will be perfect. Every cloud eh!
Inte en rom jag skulle dricka rent, men funkar nog alldeles utmärkt i en drink.
Usaly white rhum does not taste much but this one was smooth and nice
I picked this up a couple weeks back to try something new for my Mojitos. As far as super sweet rums go I don’t mind Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, so this option containing no added sugar piqued my curiosity as to how it would play in a Mojito (P.S. it does indeed make an excellent Mojito, though not quite as good as Selvarey or Havana Club 3). Having it sit around, I might as well do a review. Given that I got this rum for mojitos and wasn’t originally planning a review, I will keep this one short.
This rum is bottled at 47% so it’s a bit stronger than your run of the mill “White Latin rum”. That immediately becomes evident if you stick your nose in the Glencairn. The first whiff is straight nose searing ethanol. More so than you would think, and even more than some higher proof rums. But unlike Bacardi there are a few distinct notes that accompany that blast of ethanol. Past the “this is distilled alcohol” announcement I get a strong Lime note accompanied by Vanilla cake icing, followed interestingly enough by the distinct smell of Vanilla birthday cake itself. I looked around a bit more…but no that’s it.
On the palate I get an immediate mouthful of pungent fresh fruit medley which fades rather quickly and turns to sour apple jolly ranchers. Interesting, but once again nothing beyond that.
The finish is very light but distinct. It is but one expression and that is: If you’ve got a problem, yo he’ll solve it, check out the beat while the DJ revolves it. It’s the return of Vanilla Ic-ing.
This is not a complex rum. I guess it claims on the bottle to be a “White sipping rum”, but it’s neither interesting nor complex enough to meet that standard. It’s better than Bacardi Superior for sure, but I am not going to be reaching for it just to sip on anytime soon…or ever. Despite the higher bottling ABV this rum presents no real complexities or real notes of interest that it wouldn’t already possess at 40%.
All of that said, I used it for the purpose I got it for, Mojitos, and it does really quite well for that. It’s not going to beat Selvarey White as my preferred Mojito rum, nor will it beat the Cuban Havana Club 3 Year…but it is a long shot better than Bacardi or really any other white Spanish style rum for that purpose.
I won’t be buying another bottle of this, but it will serve perfectly well for Mojitos. I tried to use it for Between the Sheets but it absolutely refused to come out play there so alas it is fairly one dimensional.
Short Description: A rung up from Bacardi and even Don Q Cristal, but a couple rungs down from Havana Club 3 Years or Selvarey White.

Palate: fruity medley, sour apple jolly ranchers
Finish: Vanilla icing
Country of Origin: Venezuela
Province/State: Lara
Distillery: Distilerias Unidas
ABV: 47%
0-5gpL per Fatrumpirate
Flat taste for this poor quality rum. Much less tasty than other white rums. Strong unpleasant nose. Overpriced on top of it.
If you have choice choose another white rum for your favourite cocktail!
Short review, because there is almost nothing to talk about.
Smell: Almost no aromas in the nose. Some hints of sweetness and maybe mint, citrus and metallic aromas. I notice some spirit also.
Taste: The taste is mild. Paper, metalic aromas, a little bit sweet, some peppery notes.
If you need almost neutral Alcohol for mixing go for it, it's mild.
I would find better rum for the same price.
Custard and White Chocolate mingle alongside some young sweet alcohol.
"It has a nice aged note to it – some peppery spice and a bit of chilli. Finish wise it isn’t huge but it does leave a decent hit of booze and some nice spicy oak notes. Peppery and slightly heated – notes of red chilli."

I don’t like white, plane rums so my rating might not be the best one to guide you in your quest for the best white rum. I cannot think of anything positive about the spirit, only that you might want to mix it with almost everything you can get your hands on. But again, it is just not my flavor.
