This is a true dark rum , well balanced smooth taste slightly sweet. MY favourite rum, even bottled like a classic.
I am certainly no rum tasting genious but with this "old rum" I expected it to be a bit more "mature" than it is. There are many other rums for half the price that have a compareable taste. I could't find any unique characteristic.
I wasn't a fan of this at first but like others have said, if you let it breath in the glass for a bit, the rum evolves with more flavors. One shouldn't pour and drink anyway. Again, by letting this sit even for a minute or two, you get more flavors out of it.
Fantastic nose. Little sweet but lot of flavours, full of fruits. Easy to taste and drink. Was tasting it together with 5 other rums and turned out to be a winner
First, the packaging was fantastic and the wooden box was a great preview for the Rum inside. I oredered this through my local liquor store after being a fan of the Goslings Black Seal for some time. The flavors are robust, finishes strong and has a wonderful aroma.
I was given a bottle of this as a present and had genuinely never had rum before. I'm now a convert and enjoy dark and spiced rums thanks to the exquisite taste of Gosling's Family reserve.
It is a unique bottle and flavour and in my opinion one of the best rums out there
Taste: some nuts and a bit too much of alcohol
A good one for sipping
This is one of the most beautiful packages you'll ever find. A wooden box with individually numbered bottles. The bottle looks like a bottle of great wine with an amazing wax seal.
Once you've gotten past the package and try it, you'll find a darker and thicker rum than most. It is a complex rum. The spices are the dominate aroma/taste. Some carmel. Worth sipping with an ice cube if it suits you but it is quite strong as a sipper.
A little expensive compared to other options but worth trying if you can.
This is so indulgent, such a treat! dark rum, sweet, complex, treacle, cloves, so lovely, its all going on in that glass of mine, perfect for this cold winter evening with the wood burner blasting away! It's really does benefit from resting, I poured mine neat into the glass and left for a good half hour. A tad expensive but we'll worth a treat if you feel like you deserve one, enjoy.
There are notes of sweet mixed fruit and a little bitter marmalade.
"Sipped the Family Reserve is initially very sweet. On the tongue, especially you get sweet caramel and a chocolate mouthful initially."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Now thats not quite how you expect a rum to be. Smoky and some sort of oily. A dark rum that has so much variety but just not my kind of stuff. But if you like extraordinary rum give it a try. All sort of different.
