It took some time, several evenings of sipping, discovering. Not a standard rum, strong caramel taste with full range of its taste collors, from bitter to sweet. And I love caramel.
Dark & Stormy is one of my favorite drinks, and I like ‘em strong! So I knew I was gonna love this! Let it sit for a bit so you can truly appreciate the molasses and baking spice notes. This is a great rum to enjoy with dessert, as it itself is a sweet treat!
Prior to my tasting event I have herd about this one and was very curious to taste. I asked the sommelier to add this to my tasting list for my event. It would nice to have 1/2 points because it would get a 7.5 The nose notes were creamy vanilla and a little savory- 8 points and on the mouth it was smooth and soft for 7 points.
Definitely a very unique rum - but for me not in a good way. I don't mind so much it's dark color but the taste reminds me of a bitte liquer. Obviously it is not quite there yet but it goes in the direction of a Kümmerling. I don't taste anything sweet in it, even after a while it is in the glass.
Unique quality presentation. Deep mahogany colour. Smells of leather, tobacco and barrel. Some alcohol burn making it not too smooth. A long finish with burnt sugar and spicey flavours. $100 @ LCBO
Fresh brew black tea with scent of think dark cacao liquer. Steamed banana leafs wrapped with fresh coconut flesh. Woody and jammy.
Woody, toasty with black tea tannin on palate. Sweetness of unripe banana with tart bite and dried fruits such as apricots follow with mild tobacco leafs.
Woody and herbicious finishing with dried raisins and pear. Pleasant and flavourful yet not too sweet.
Un rhum comme je les aime. Pas trop sur l'alcool. Belle robe
I tried this as one sample neat in a well stocked bar. Wise decision! As usual with Gosling's, there is a heavy molasses flavor. There is also a burn on the tongue, but with no after taste. I could not wait for this shot to be finished so that I could move onto my second rum out of three trials. It is definitely not worth the hefty price tag of $70 per bottle or $15 per shot.. With each sip, my rating just kept going down from it's initial one of 6. This one also takes my prize for being the absolute worst rum that I could spend money on, due to it's very high price and fairly low rating.
To begin, and as you should know that everything enters through the eyes; so i have to say that the presentation of this rum is magnificent, the bottle used in cellars sealed with sera and the wooden box stuffed with straw, i thought it was a very wise choice. Then speaking of the smell i can say that it is a little intense, feeling vanilla, wood and chocolate more marked; when tasting it you can realize that it is a soft rum, without alcoholic punch, with vanilla flavor, dark chocolate and to a lesser extent wood and tobacco. I think it's a great rum, and without doubt has 9 points out of 10.
There are notes of sweet mixed fruit and a little bitter marmalade.
"Sipped the Family Reserve is initially very sweet. On the tongue, especially you get sweet caramel and a chocolate mouthful initially."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Pours very dark red. Spice is strong, right in the nose with notes of chocolate and tobacco. Alcohol is smooth with just a slight bite but fades immediately and gives way to woody spices and hints of chocolate. I get a lot of tobacco notes too. Pleasant finish. Clean mouthfeel. Aftertaste isn't strong but lingers and entices another sip. A solid rum at $75.00
