I didn't particularly care for the JM VSOP or XO. So I thought I'd give a pricier vintage JM a try to see if I liked that more. While this is better, it's still not my style of rum.
Smells and tastes of charred oak and spice. Maybe a hint of a smokey black cherry like the other JM Rhums I've tried. Has a nice bite at 44%abv, and is nicely smooth.
Very unique and very interesting, but it's just not my style of rum. A bit too dry for me (though nicely spiced), and lacks the sweet rum flavor I love so much.
I'll try the Cuvee du Fontateur next (if I can find it) to see if I like that more.
The Rhum JM Vintage 1996 has not been reduced with water ( full proof - 45% ) which let it to keep all its aromas. It propose some nice vegetal and fruity flavor that you will retrieve during your tasting. with its spicy finish, this JM Vintage 1996 is really nice and has to be tasted by all rhum lovers.
Beautiful bouquet of vegetal and fruity aromas with hints of banana and pineapple. Vanilla and oak is also present. A round palate with toasted notes, almonds, gingerbread. A very robust body and a nice complexity. It is a remarkable rum that deserves its place in the great rum. Rate = 8,5

I'm not generally a big fan of agricole rums, and I hesitated to provide a rating honestly. I'm not sure I'm the most qualified person to rate this rum, but I'll give it a shot.
So the bottle is quite simple, but in its simplicity there's something charming about it. It's a subdued, humble presentation which I thought was interesting, and maybe was intentionally understated to leave the "wow factor" for the tasting. I wish that were the case, but honestly I felt a bit let down. The rum has a reasonable scent and taste, but it had quite a burn to me at the finish. All in all, it's an acceptable rum to me, but it isn't the first rum I'd grab out of the bar to enjoy..
Perhaps with more experience with agricole rums, I can be a better judge. For now, I'm giving it a 6. My scoring system (with weights) is as follows:
-Packaging (10%): 5
-Color (20%): 5
-Nose (20%): 7.5
-Palette (25%): 8
-Smoothness (25%): 4
