El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.
The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

This is a really solid choice and a good value, especially now that the added sugar content has been lowered (or possibly removed), but even though this is thicker, deeper and more robust than the 12, it's not as solid a value as it is slightly less sweet and interesting. For $15-20 less the 12 might be the better choice. N: deep sugary molasses, thick, solid. T/F: sweet but not too much so, deeper, thick again on the finish, mid spicy, with some oakiness.
Absolute balance of taste with great smell. Perfect for neat drinking.
My #1 choice so far.
No longer is this beautiful rum caged and muffled by unreasonable amounts of added sugar! It can finally sing its glorious song of tropical fruits, bitter chocolate, and oh so lovely oak.
There is so much going on in this rum that Iβm nearly overwhelmed. After being introduced to the Foursquare ECS series I thought I would never enjoy a 40% bottling again, but Iβve been proven wrong!
This is the second rum Iβve had from the El Dorado brand, after the 12 year old edition. El Dorado 15 is a blend from several rums, that matured for at least 15 years in oak barrels. It has a warm mahogany color. In the nose itβs amazing, a well balanced mix between the richness of coffee, the sweetness of figs and oranges and the complexity of a slight hint of cinnamon. In the taste thereβs this richness again, dark sugar, caramel, a little bit oaky which is surrounded by some dark butter. The aftertaste is the best I have ever had. It is long, complex and amazing. You taste molasses, orange and vanilla. Conclusion: The El Dorado 12 is a very good rum, but the 15 edition is definitely superior. It was the best rum Iβve had so far, so this one deserves a 10.
You can't go wrong with any of the El Dorado rums but this one is awesome.
This is an outstanding rum. It's subtly sweet with hints of vanilla and caramel. Enjoyable on it's own or with your favorite mix. Highly recommended!
El Dorado 12 years is a popular rum. Probably a lot buying it when starting discover rum, yes like me.. el dorado 12 is a good rum for its money so I decided to pick up the 15 year old. Itβs a disappointment. Maybe less sugar and more alcohol. But the taste didnβt improve. The smell is really good. You smell a lot of oak and vanilla. But if u taste a strong alcohol taste. Then itβs become really odd. ( like is that rum?!) then the oak and vanilla comes slowly but it ends with sugar, to much sugar for me with some oak.
I gave the 12 a 7/10. The 15 year old I give 6/10 because it is less rum for more money.. (27β¬ for the 12 and 37β¬ for the 15)
and i took the plantation 2005 barbados next to it with the same alcohol in it and the same price of the 15 year old dorado. And the plantation is more soft. So more alcohol doesnβt mean more alcohol taste..
I had a shitty day today, but the first sip of my beloved El Dorado 15 years turned it all around. For me, on of the best rums you can get for such a modest price (β¬38 in Holland).
It starts with a great sweet smell that brings you to a tropical place of relaxation. Then it gets even better with the taste: sweet but round, a little burn but nothing too overwhelming. Well balanced. The only con that I can think of is the lack of a long aftertaste. Which results in taking a sip again quite swiftly. Which starts the whole great experience over again.
I tend to try out as many good rums as possible and this is one of the spare ones that I keep coming back to. Cant go wrong with this one, cheers!
This rum when you get a good bottle is fantastic. It honestly deserves a 9. However, I've purchased 4 to 5 bottles of it and you can tell a difference in taste from bottle to bottle. This is obvious with it being aged 15 years that there will be some differences, but some of the bottles almost have a chemical taste to them. Not sure what does this, if it is in their aging process or what. If you take the gamble and get a good bottle you will no doubt enjoy it. One of the finest rums at it's price point.
Full nose packed with dark coffee, candied orange, almonds, dark chocolate...
"El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum review by Mike at Ultimate Rum Guide"
Has more oak and chocolate notes.
"It is initially very sweet, apples, bananas and rum soaked raisins but there are also some bittersweet plum like notes. The finish is spicy and fruity and long lasting."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I always marvel at the complexity and balance of the Luxury Cask Aged rums of El Dorado. These rums, the 12-Year, the 15-Year and the 21-Year all have a very obvious oak influence at the core of their flavour. Yet, in every case the oak is harnessed and made to be part of the overall flavour of the rum without sacrificing those other rum-filled flavours we love so much. The vanilla, the toffee, the fruit, and the leathery tobacco all meld perfectly with the oak creating rums of exquisite balance and complexity. The El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve Rum is a well crafted, sipping rum which should be on the rum shelf of every serious rum collector.
