So much rum for the money! This is a great sipper and i can realy enjoy it in the mid week and on the weekends.
Way better then his little Brother (5years). Not suitable for mixing. Go pure with it and you'll get à Nice moment.
Nice balance between sweet /dry.
I like rums neat and this one is nice for sipping. Good value.
It initially comes across as a possible sipper due to its notes of sweet caramel, yet it lacks that je ne sais quoi, that unknown (to me) variable that transforms a rum. It feels like a waste to mix it, yet it's not quite there as a sipper. Perhaps a second tasting is in order?
EDIT: A fine rum to sip and mix.
This is a great sipping rum and also goes very well as a mixer. For the price you can not go wrong for an everyday rum. Definitely one to have in the house.
I've drank this bottle years ago before I did rum ratings. An unusual flavor but not unpleasant. Smoothness is good and it's reasonably priced. I think it deserves a 7.
I picked up a bottle of this today to add to my mixer rums, which will keep me from drinking too much of the more expensive rums in my cabinet. Again, fellow reviewers on Rum Ratings led me to a good purchase decision. I also had no idea that it could also be used as a neat sipper. It's older brother at 12 years old is only about 9 dollars more, but this one is cheap enough to not feel guilty about drinking too much and using it as a mixer. I would choose to sip it neat or on the rocks.
The aroma is like perfume and the taste is of complex spices from the southern Caribbean mixed with some vanilla. Super smooth with no bite and definitely semi-dry with only 14 gpl of added sugar.. It is really quite unique and I can now see where it's older brothers get their DNA from. What a pleasant and affordable surprise!
Update December 23, 2018: Less than a half bottle remains after 2 months and it still tastes rich and as great as the day that I first opened it. I attribute this long shelf life due to it being semi-dry and still having only a half bottle of air to oxidize it. It's older brothers could never make this claim because the flavors would change for the worse after only two months due to excessive added sugar.
I know this is dosed with a small amount of sugar. But it reminds me of nothing so much as a lower proof Appleton Rare 12. That is not faint praise. I think both rums would be perfect neat for Bourbon drinkers. In a sipper I just crave that mouth coating smoothness that a higher dose of sugar will bring. But this one on ice in a 1:1 ratio with cola? An excellent drink. Though I don't drink this neat, and I do the 12, I actually rated this a point higher because I feel it better represents it's age and price point.
I bought El Dorado's 3, 8, 12 and 15 for a gathering. The 3 and 8 went into cocktails, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the 8 year old one neat. Since it's supposed to be a 7 according to this website, I'll give it a 7 and use that as a benchmark for future tastings.
It’s floral, there are notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits.
"It isn’t rough but it does have quite a spicy burn and finish. ."
