Guyana | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still
El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including coffey stills and a double wooden pot still before being aged in bourbon oak casks.
Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region.

By the time I finished the El Dorado, I had already had a change of heart, and time has only solidfied my feelings. ED12 is very good rum, but it is not top notch. Too simple and too sweet, IMHO. But I'm leaving my original comments below because they did represent my feelings at the time, and readers deserve to see a more positive side to this nevertheless very respectable rum.
After reading up on rums, I finally settled on the Mount Gay XO and El Dorado 12 as a complementary pair that each offers a great tasting experience at a relatively affordable price (about $45 & $55 respectively). I once had Ron Zacapa XO, so I know what a "10" can taste like. To be fair, I'd have to try the Zacapa with these to really know how much - if any - separation there really is. But what I can say is that regardless of the exact score, what the majority of people have written here and on other websites is spot on: Mount Gay XO is for people who want that whiskey twang, while El Dorado 12 has a pure, smooth rum flavor. Both are very sophisticated, and alternating between them (or even mixing them occasionally!) really helps keep both fresh and interesting. I also recommend to anyone out there who only drinks rum to expand out as I did (originally only drank whiskey) and get some whiskey and some brandy, too. All very different and worthwhile tasting experiences. Enjoy!
P.S. I'm using this same basic text for both my Mount Gay XO and El Dorado 12 reviews.
I love my rums neat to enjoy and appreciate the work and skill of the distiller and master blender and this one is really working for me now.
The aroma is not over powering. Just enough vanilla and caramel for me. wonderful flavors in my mouth.
This one could be dangerous.
Mein 5. Rating:
Geschmack in Cola (Note 8):
12 yo El Dorado is for me the most valuable aged rum below 1000CZK.
Very smooth and easy to drink... I have to be carefull with this one.. Without noticing, the bottle was empty..
At first I do not like the aroma, but after a few minutes in a glass relatively nice fruit and sugar smell. Taste is fantastic, smooth, at the beginning acceptably sweet, fine dry end. Well balanced rum, I will definitely buy another bottle.
Lush tropical fruit and spice nose with hints of honey and dark sugar...
"El Dorado 12-Year rum review by Mike at Ultimate Rum Guide"
It’s sweeter with more delicate fruit flavours coming to the fore.
"It’s very sweet and quite light. It’s very easy drinking. As a sipping rum it as easy to drink."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

As of may 2017 this is my new fav!!!! and my current sipper on ice. I'm getting closer to finding the pet sipper. I'm a total amateur at this but I'm getting lots of brown sugar and real caramel on the noise and on the pallet. It smells like lots of other aged rum, sweet but goes down super smooth. Love it. Can't wait to try the 15yr then the 25yr
