El Dorado 12-Year rum

El Dorado 12-Year

Guyana | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still

El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including coffey stills and a double wooden pot still before being aged in bourbon oak casks.

Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region.

A smell of toffee, nut, some molasses, spicy, very nice. The taste is a little bit spicy and sweet (but only a little bit).
The finish is slightly bitter but still nice.
A very nice rum.

Go to Demerara for the price! I love it! Added sweatness. While smooth not my choice to sip on.

Landed from irish whiskey some time ago, the El Dorado 12 was the very first rum that I bought.
I'm not really in to buy some cheap spirits just for try, so my choose was this bottle.

Nose: caramel, toffee, light oak and burnt wood, dark and ripe fruits, vanilla;

Taste: starts with a light sweetness, very soft and smooth. Again caramel, toffee, vanilla, but now a touch of tropical fruits. Then kick in the oak and the wood, a little of smoky, burtn wood, very tasty.
It ends with a touch of spice, again wood and powerful retronasal coconut and vanilla.

Notes: it has a very good full-bodied taste and smell, when forgot the glass on the table until the day after, you can still smell some woody notes...impressive!

I had read reviews online which made me believe that this rum is partly aged in sherry casks. Like, nuances of dried fruits and nuts. However, in my opinion there's nothing really suggestive of sherry casks about this one. The nose screams "bourbon". It has plenty of vanilla and even that luscious note of sun cream typical of some bourbon whiskeys. Full bodied and aromatic, it's an excellent choice whenever cocktail recipes call for Demerara rum.

My wife and I experimented with this rum a bit during the lockdown. At first we liked it. It is clearly on the very sweet side, but so are a few others we have enjoyed at times, Diplomatico Reserva and Papa's Pilar come to mind. The price point is reasonable. The flavor palette is alright, reasonably complex with some notes of burnt sugar, dark fruit and citrus. the finish and overall effect is just too sweet. My wife could tolerate the sweetness, but I eventually found it rather cloying. The other big problem I have with sweeter rums is that it seems to take a bit more of them to get you where you want to go. Also, if you indulge a bit more the harsh after effects seem worse.
Anyway, if you are a fan of very sweet rums and don't get any negative effects from the sugar this might be a good choice, but for us, not so much.

This is a great sipper and if you're a mixer its great with a splash of coke. The hint of caramel is what I always fall sucker too. Its not to expensive which makes this a perfect everyday rum.

An amazingly smooth rum with a lovely deep amber colour. To me I get caramel upfront and then a touch of soft vanilla, which is not overpowering and leaves you wanting more. A good value rum as well.

My first bought rum was this beauty.
Not the best, but most def not the worst.
And here, is dont do the rum justice.
It is great. Once you start drinking more and more over different brands of rum this can either be your homebrand or one just to remember
