the Diplomatico distillery is located on the northern slopes of the Andes mountains in Venezuela. The area has a rich rum history dating to 1896,

I like this rum, not a lot of age but very enjoyable as a good rum and coke or can be enjoupyednon a rock or two...
If you just want a rum and coke, go for this Diplomaitco Reserva. Only reason why I tried this rum is because my local store didn't have Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Not good for sipping and I only drink it when there's nothing else on my shelf. Still a big fan of Diplomatico, but I will never buy this rum again it I can help it. With that said this is still better than other popular rums on out there.
I went searching for my favorite Venezuelan rum, which is Ron Pampero Anaversario, but they were all sold out. Ever since I spent one day in Caracas way back in 1991, I first got to try an incredible one called Gran Selecto, and still have the empty bottle. Lo and behold, the fine print on it says Santa Teresa and it is available locally, so that one is next on my list to find!
I had heard so much about the Diplomatico rums from Venezuela and this liquor store had three to choose from. I was suckered in by the fancy bottle and moderate price on this one. The excitement ended when I opened it up when I got home. There is too much of a hint of rubbing alcohol in this one for my tastes. Yes, it can be sipped neat or on the rocks, so it would therefore make a good mixer. There is just not enough to get excited about to justify me buying any more from Diplomatico. Not bad, but not good. It can't seem to make up it's mind.
In terms of my enjoyment I would slot this above El Dorado 12 and below the 15. A worthy younger brother to the excellent Reserva Exclusiva.
The Reserva Exclusiva is my go to sipping rum. I bought this one when I wanted to cut down costs a little. This is by no means it's big brother, but I can taste that they are related. The toffee is still there, the vanilla is still there and that little hint of dried fruit. A bit more sharply alcoholic in taste but not enough to discourage me. Another plus is that I don't feel like i'm committing sacrilige using this in drinks or with coke or ice.
I found this one on sale for less than $20. Very tasy and a great value. Not as good as the Diplomatico Exclusiva but very nice. sweet and easy drinking with some caramel and vanilla flavors.
My everyday rum that I don't mind sharing with friends who want to add mix

Not as refined and smooth as the Reserva Exclusiva (my favourite to date) and certainly not as sweet. Needs a few minutes to breathe before tasting.
