My missers decided to buy me an expensive rum (contextually speaking - we're on the Canadian prairies where prices can soar) for a combined Christmas and birthday present, so I had a good look at what was available and settled on the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. I was really keen to get it home and give it a try, but . . .
You can tell by the nose that it's really oakey and fragrant, which sounds like a winner right off the bat but first impressions can be so misleading. First the good, which being that it's very smooth and slips down easily without much spice/burn, and it's a lovely dark amber colour (although a friend now tells me that additional colouring is added). It's aromatic and definitely tastes 'expensive,' at least to my relatively uneducated pallet. It has vanilla, leather, vinyl and floral notes and isn't overly sweet, with tiny hints of honey and coffee.
Now the disappointing. Other than the overwhelming impression of leather (I presume from the oak maturation) it has little flavour. There's a hint of petrochemicals on the finish and that's really about it. I therefore confess to being disappointed and I'm kinda sorry I bought it - especially considering how much we paid. I dunno; you might really like it but this rum just isn't in my wheelhouse and I should've gone with my good ol' reliable favourite El Dorado 15.
So there you have it. It was worth a try but some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.
A great rum right on ice, very clean finish that I like.
It was long time ago when i tried it first. I tried it again yesterday.
It was not good but not bad…
I think maybe a little bit flavourless
My first bottle of this and it's a solid sipper. Tastes like bottled Christmas - rich, smooth and spicy. I like the toffee and raisin notes, with subtle hints of oily orange. Satisfying on the palette with a lingering finish, its reputation is certainly deserved and scores highly in terms of value for money. I look forward to seeing if there can be anything better at this price - it will need to be something truly special!
One of the cleanest rums for sipping. Not the best but it is worth a place in your cabinet.
Diplomatico is one of the good ones but for sure in the sweeter range than some traditional rums like Mount gay
Yes it has added sugar but it is a great sipper especially if you like it on the sweeter side.
"The palate evokes chocolate sauce and the sweet toffee, fudge and tropical fruit flavours from the nose"
"The nose is dominated by notes of caramel, toffee and crème. On the back end of the aromas, I can detect a hint of smoke and pineapple"

Smells sweet. It is fruity, oranges, grapes and raisins with scents of chocolate and a sweet almost syrupy.
"The tasting notes on the site are very accurate vanilla, fudge/toffee sauce are noticeable as are notes of vanilla and a finish which is slightly bitter like cocoa which leaves a hit of oakiness on the taste buds. The finish is pretty short. ."

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
