I’m not a professional judge, but this seems to have added sugars and/or flavoring. Heavy coffee taste is overpowering the rum. Purchased this bottle 12 years ago, tried it then didn’t like it. Re-opened today, still not a good bottle.
A fine and tasty rum, honest twenty-year aging has done its positive work.
8-Nose:As usual with Dictador, the nose of this rum opens with a good glassful of coffee. But to stop there would be to state the obvious: this coffee is flavored with vanilla and sweetened with a dollop of molasses. Black molasses has a distinct licorice aroma. The nose is quite dry, with walnuts, pecans and almonds. These nuts are caught in a hard caramel, and we can now easily visualize a slab of crunchy nougatine.
Licorice continues to lead the way on aeration, bathed in tobacco and coffee smoke. Caramelized nuts like pecan are still present, forming a powder mixed with spices. In this definitely very dark register, bread and wood are toasted.
8:On the palate, a small, sweet bubble of yellow fruit bursts out and spills over first. This sweetness compensates for the darker side of the nose, which logically translates here into a peppery, even spicy harshness. This continues with salted brown caramel, lots of coffee and a spicy woodiness where coriander adds a little freshness and whimsy. Molasses and licorice complete the deep, dark picture.
7,5:The last lingering notes on the palate are dry walnuts, caramelized pecans and maple syrup.
A luxurious rum with complex flavors of caramel, toffee, and spices. Velvety texture with a long, satisfying finish
If you like very dark and oaky rums, this is for you.
OMG sooooooo gooooood! Glad I had the opportunity to enjoy. The nose gives you cocoa and coffee. In the mouth there's flavors of chocolate, vanilla, carmel and a big finish of oak and coffee! The flavors are strong and harmonious. The sweetness is gentle. The alcohol does not burn at all but leaves a nice warmth in the mouth. You don't want to waste this Rum with Coke. One of my favorite rums and if you get the opportunity - you wont be disappointed.
I wanted to try this to see if there's too much difference to Platinum. Sadly, there is. A butload. It's not so smooth. More woody, less walnutty than platinum, but still a good rum. Although, there are other rums in the same price range that I like better.
There is a hint of tobacco and a touch of tar. Overall though its mostly sweet.
"It has a reasonable amount of alcohol burn to reassure you it is a 40% spirit. It’s more like a kind of sherried flavoured vodka. I’m sure such a drink exists somewhere."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

It's sweet and smooth, not many fruit notes, but a lot of brown sugar and port flavours
