Slips under the radar as Scotland isn’t much known for rum, but if you don’t like whiskey, then this is definitely worth trying. Very spicy flavour and smell, nice and smooth to sip.
Right, its important to say I'm Scottish so a bit biased. That being said Dark Matter is unique. And unique in a good way. Yes, its spicy with tones of liquorice, ginger and coriander but its bloody good. Don't be scared folks, give it a whirl whilst listening to some of The specials and you'll be fine.
Very unusual spiced super spiced tastes like Christmas cinnamon cloves very strong tasting
for a rum with a trendy label i thought it would be gimmicky. Although not a go getter rum it was almost there. The taste is good not hard hitting, little bit alcoholic tasting but not bad, not worth 90 dollars
Made up in Aberdeenshire, this was recommended by a colleague since it made the shelf in Tesco. Distinctive flavour that has to be tried. Bit of a love it hate it marmite thing I expect. I love it!
Excellent with a good quality ginger beer.
I bought this Rum for £25, RRP £29, so off to a good start, having saved £4. But that’s where the good vibes ended with this rum because, wow, how much do I not like this! It’s so fiery it’s brutal! I’m not kidding when I say it made my lips burn and literally gave me heartburn when I drank this neat! To cut to the chase, drinking this without a mixer is akin to having a Vindaloo Curry, it’s that intense. But having said that, even with tonnes of ice and mixed with Coca-Cola it still remains too searing for me. At the end of the day it boils down to this. If you like ginger, pepper, cloves, I’m presuming all these spices have been used, then I recommend this Rum. However Dead Man’s Fingers spiced is very similar to this, but is priced at only £22. Just saying.
Not the worst rum I've ever had, but far from the best. Clove and peppercorn flavours overpower everything else, to the extent that mixing with coke barely changes the flavour at all; it just cuts straight through.
I mix this with ginger beer and a dash of lime. I enjoy both the colour and the flavour, a bit of punch in the spice.
I've been meaning to try this out for a while, and while in lockdown I reached ****-it, and bought a bottle.
Strong on clove on the nose with a chaser of ginger and pepper. I'm not the biggest fan of clove so was a little put off, however, when I tried it straight, I was pleasantly surprised.
Vanilla, cinnamon, strong caramel rummy flavour with a bit of clove producing an almost cola-like flavour. Very smooth, very balanced. Very enjoyable. Mixed great with everything I've thrown at it.
I shouldn't be surprised by another good Scottish rum. Highly rate it, could easily slog straight or have mixed. What a hit!
PS. The hot cross bun simile is accurate on smell, but on taste, rather than butter, spread vanilla cola ice cream... Lol
The spicing is authentic and smells very real not at all artificial.
"The rum is very Spicy. Despite the added sugar it isn’t a cloying drink when served neat. The finish is slightly bitter and the throat is left with a black pepper burn rather than an alcohol burn. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Spiced is not the same as spiced. Spiced rum should taste like rum, not like an xmas drink gone awfully wrong. But it could replace the morning coffee though :)
