Beautiful addition to the tiki bar for Dr Funks and Navy Grogs!
Very dark color with heavy, almost bitter, molasses flavor. Will definitely not be to everyone's taste, but this is a great blackstrap rum to use in tiki drinks I made a pineapple trainwreck that was divine and it goes great in a docotor Funk too. If you need that punch of flavor look no further.
Nose has the kind of fruity funk that I dream of and is pretty strong. Picking up overripe banana and caramel. Reminiscent of Wray and Nephew here. Smells like a funky pot stilled Jamaican rum!
Initial sip has some sweetness right when it hits your tongue, which rapidly fades. What’s next is kind of a mix of bitterness with some funk in there, but less funk that what I would’ve expected, given the nose. The finish is surprising, it has a character I can only describe as “whiskey like”. Tasting this rum stand-alone, it is quite unique, and not what I expected.
Been experimenting with this one in cocktails. Makes a good jungle bird, as advertised on the bottle. In a painkiller it’s the only rum my girlfriend has told me she likes better than Pusser’s. In a grog and a bombo, there’s an interesting character that comes out and the extra funk is noticeable. Also works great in a Doctor Funk (of course). I suspect this will work well as a character changing complement to other rums in some of my more complex tiki recipes.
I recommend this bottle be on the shelf for anyone building out an assortment of rums for making cocktails. It’s very high quality and fills a clear niche.
I am a big fan of Jamaican rums. This one has a strong molasses fragrance when poured; however, it is much milder and sweeter than it smells, Great straight or with some Creole Shrub. Good neat or over the rocks.
No better way to make a Jungle Bird or a grog. Lots of funk, molasses, and treacle. Tastes like made in a pot still that was not adequately cleaned, but in a good way. For beer people, this is the Vapuer or Fantome of rums. Surely not for everyone, but I think this is super underrated.
Hit me, with the excellent blend of sweet and funk this rum is a mainstay of my cabinet.
What an incredible addition to the collection. Everything I was hoping it would be.
Nose: Molasses, rotting fruit, pineapple, banana, Jamaican "funk"
Palate: Caramel, molasses, oak, and pineapple (again)
Tail: An oaky and peaty scotch-like aftertaste with some brown sugar sweetness. Nowhere near what I was expecting, but very pleasant.
For starters, this rum smells AMAZING. I haven't found another that smells quite like it, with a great balance of fruity and molasses-y. Again, the tail is wonderful as well, with some bizarre yet pleasant scotch flavors. I'd highly recommend trying this rum for those two facets of it alone.
My primary gripe is that this rum is a little weak on the palate. In the early moments of sipping it, it tastes mostly like very-watered down molasses and caramel. It takes a few seconds for the flavors to really take hold and develop into something more complex: I'd rather have something that can hit the ground running.
Overall, I think this is a great rum to try and have on hand for random occasions, but it won't be my go-to for sipping. It's good to note that this is one of the only pot-still black rums on the market right now, so it might be valuable to keep in the bar anyway for specific tiki cocktails as well.
Pure Jamaican pot still with plenty of funk on the nose - overripe bananas, molasses. At 46.5% ABV, this is perfect for adding character to cocktails.

This rum is definitely not for everyone but if you like the Jamaican style you will love this.
Nose is straight rotten bananas and fruit. To the point I let it air in the room for a moment and the whole room smelled like banana. Hits you right in the face.
Up front taste is that fruit smell, slightly sweet, but definitely Jamaican funky town. Leading into the part that took me a minute to get used to. The palate was weird to me at first. It’s funky musty and almost rotten. I expected a dryer Hampden like funk but this is different and thought this was the caramel coloring taste that makes it a black rum. Regardless as you sip it opens up and becomes much more complex funky spice. The funk and oak spice meld together and trail off to make a nice finish.
Overall enjoyable sipper at a great price (under 30 bucks in the Carolinas). Plan to always have one of these around especially to show new rum fans the complexity of Jamaican rum.
Edit: this rum makes the best rum and coke I’ve ever had. Take that Coca Cola to Funky Town!
