Flensburg FRC Jamaica Hampden HLCF Pedro Ximenez Sherry Octave 2-Year

This bottling from Flensburg is a rum from Jamaica from the Hampden Distillery. It carries the Mark HLCF and is therefore a high ester rum of the middle category. The rum was allowed to be stored for two years in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask and was bottled with a cask strength of 53.2% alcohol without filtration or additives as a very limited single cask in 79 bottles.

On the nose, the rum is unusually sweet and thick for such a young Hampden. The sherry cask has a very strong influence on the rum. I get Hampden notes with overripe tropical fruit, vanilla, red fruits, and toasted wood. With time, the rum becomes more and more smoky. The barrel influence becomes more and more evident over time. On the palate, the rum is creamy and immediately shows a lot of wood influence with oak, smoke, tropical fruit, esters, and overripe aromas. Add raisins and pepper. The finish is dry with raisins, lots of oak, bitter substances and a slight musty note.

The barrel influence is very high. If the Velier Hampden Pagos has not enough sherry influence for you, this is the place to be. Even if it's unlikely to get a bottle. The alcohol content is just right for easy sipping. That's also what the rum is good at. Accompany a good conversation. There is no real depth here. If you only want classic HLCF notes, you're in the wrong place. I like the rum because it stands out and seems quite grown-up for such a young rum.

In der Nase ist der Rum ungewöhnlich süß und dick für einen so jungen Hampden. Das Sherry Fass hat sehr starken Einfluss auf den Rum. Ich bekomme Hampden Noten mit überreifer tropischer Frucht, Vanille, rote Früchte, und getoastetes Holz. Mit der Zwit wird der Rum immer rauchiger. Der Fasseinfluss wird mit der Zeit immer deutlicher. Am Gaumen wirkt der Rum cremig und zeigt direkt viel Holzeinfluss mit Eiche, Rauch, tropische Frucht, Ester, und überreife Aromen. Dazu Rosinen und Pfeffer. Der Abgang ist trocken mit Rosine, viel Holz, Bitterstoffen und einer leichten modrigen Note.

Der Fasseinfluss ist sehr hoch. Wem der Pagos mit genug Sherry Einfluss hat ist hier genau richtig. Auch wenn es unwahrscheinlich istbnoch eine Flasche zu bekommen. Der Alkoholgehalt ist genau richtig fürs easy sipping. Das ist auch was der Rum gut kann. Eine gute Konversation unkompliziert. begleiten. Tiefe ist hier nicht vorhanden. Wer nur klassische HLCF Noten möchte ist hier falsch. Ich mag den Rum da er sich abhebt und für einen so jungen Rum durchaus erwachsen wirkt.
