If you’re a fan of Hampden’s other Great House releases you will not be disappointed with this one.
Nose - oak, brown sugar, black cherries, lemon peel and a heavy dose of funk
Palate - pear, coconut and pepper
Finish - long finish, slightly salty, buttery, raspberry and tobacco
I think this might be my new favorite. Compared to the 2021 it’s a little funkier, brighter on the nose and just seems to have a little more Oomph all around.
Definitely would recommend.
I've become a huge fan of this entire series, and I try to get my hands on a bottle for every year. This review is long overdue because I've been sipping on this bottle for almost a year now and finally getting around to reviewing it.
Once again, this rum does not miss.
The 2022 edition is delightfully funky on the nose and quite rich. The age comes through in the nose as well - subtle notes of oak. It's unmistakably Hampden.
It's hot to the tongue at 55% but not overwhelmingly so. Waves of flavor take over, from carmel to oak to some bitterness, and of course plenty of that banana-to-gasoline hogo you would expect to be the signature of a Hampden rum.
A+ for the 2022, this series has yet to be beat in my book.
When I first opened the bottle, poured a bit in a glass and nosed the contents, I thought I'd found my first 10. However, on the palate it wasn't quite as great as the nose, but still a solid 9. It has a velvety viscosity to it that I really like, but the 55% ABV is a bit hot on the tongue. I'll experiment with a few drops of water to try and dial in an optimum blend for my palate.
Its missing the banana notes of the 8 year that @Alas mentioned, and has more of the high-ester components in the blend, so its a totally different flavor profile than the 8 year. Very intense and flavorful, and I'm not experienced enough with agricole rums to say for sure, but perhaps this tastes like a Barbancourt on steroids, with a bit more bitterness and dryness.
I'm still finding my way around the Jamaican rum landscape, and every one has its own unique character, which I find very interesting and appealing so far.
edit: after a week in the bottle I'm not as crazy about this as I was on day one. Its interesting and intense, but I'm finding that I prefer the flavor of the 8 year, with its more fruity profile. This has an industrial chemical side to it that I liked better on the first day than I do now after a week, so I'm dropping my rating from 9 to 8. I know rum changes a bit over the first week or two after opening the bottle, so I'm not sure how much of my change of opinion has to do with the rum oxidizing a bit, and how much has to do with the novelty of the flavor wearing off.
I think this is an excellent rum, but to me its not worth 2x the price of the 8yo, so that's why I'm giving it an 8, and I rated the 8yo a 9.
All of the Great Houses are fantastic, though I like the 2021 more than this 2022 (splitting hairs).
Vic technicky a funky než 21. Typický hampden. Chybi elegance oproti 21, ale víc divočiny, ať si každý vybere co mu vyhovuje víc.

This rum comes from Jamaica from the Hampden Distillery and is the annual Great House bottling. The blend of different vintages and marks is put together by the Master Blender and has been stored tropical for an average of 7 years. The rum is bottled with 55% alcohol without additives. There are 3600 bottles.
In the glass, the rum needs some time. This bottling looks young and wild. I get a lot of fermented fruit, solvent and some vanilla. Overripe banana and pineapple. On the palate, the rum is powerful with candied fruit, overripe tropical fruit, vanilla and more barrel notes. The rum becomes more woody and spicy towards the finish and is nice and dry.
Definitely not my favorite among the Hampden bottlings. I like the 2021 much better. It seems that the Great House bottlings are getting younger and younger. Also, the nose has too much fermented. A good rum but not as balanced as hoped.
