Flensburg 2002 Trinidad Barracuda Single Cask For Sea Shepherd TDL 20-Year

This bottling by the Flensburg Rum Company is a TDL rum from Trinidad. The rum was distilled in 2002 in pot style and was allowed to store 15 years tropical and 5 years continental in ex-bourbon casks. The rum was bottled at cask strength of 61.4% alcohol as a single cask without additives or filtration in 256 bottles.

The nose is a nice mix of lots of fruit, especially berries and mint, which goes in the direction of menthol. The nose is fresh and soft. There is also a certain amount of wood with caramel and a slight sweetness. It's all nicely balanced. On the palate, the rum surprises with an almost impossible softness and drinkability. I get a lot of fresh fruit, again with mint and menthol. Now also more barrel notes and wood. Candied fruit and some caramel. The whole thing seems strangely fleeting and thin. Not knowing if it is bad, the rum seems to fly over the tongue. All the typical TDL notes are there. That's good. The finish becomes woody, somewhat bitter and slightly astringent. The rum becomes a bit roasted and much more medicinal. The mint also remains for the time being.

This rum fascinates me. As a TDL 2002, it has to take a back seat because the bottling of Artesanal is much more intense and has some dirt, which I like more. The Barracuda is incredibly soft and the alcohol is perfectly integrated. I would never guess over 60%. That's incredible. A very tasty rum, but not my favorite as a TDL. But the softness is a feature that makes this rum stand out from the crowd.

Der Rum wurde in Fassstärke von 61,4% Alkohol als Single Cask ohne Zusatzstoffe oder Filtration in 256 Flaschen abgefüllt.

Die Nase ist eine schöne Mischung aus viel Frucht, vor allem Beeren und Minze, welche richtung Methol geht. Die Nase ist frisch und weich. Es ist auch ein gewisser Holzanteil dabei mit Karamel und einer leichten Süße. Das ganze ist angenehm ausgewogen. Am Gaumen überrascht der Rum mit einer fast unmöglichen Weichheit und trinkbarkeit. Ich bekomme wieder viel frische Frucht, wieder mit Minze und Menthol. Dazu jetzt auch mehr Fassnoten und Holz. Kandierte Früchte und etwas Karamel. Das ganze wirkt aber seltsam flüchtig und dünn. Es sind alle typischen TDL Noten da, aber der Rum scheint über die Zunge zu fliegen. Der Abgang wird holziger, etwas bitter und leicht astringend. Der Rum wird etwas röstig und deutlich medizinischer. Auch die Minze bleibt erst einmal bestehen.

Dieser Rum fasziniert mich. Als TDL 2002 muss er sich hinten anstellen, da die Abfüllung von Artesanal deutlich intensiver und dreckiger daher kommt, was mir eher gefällt. Der Barracuda ist unheimlich weich und der Alkohol unfassbar perfekt eingebunden. Ich würde nie auf über 60% tippen. Das ist unglaublich. Ein sehr leckerer Rum, aber als TDL nicht mein Favorit. Die Weichheit ist aber ein Merkmal, was diesen Rum aus der Masse herraus stechen lässt.

Rozhodně doporučuji, pokud na tuto láhev někde narazíte, určitě kupte. ;-)

On the nose you get bright fruit, slightly toasted tropical wood with a light spice, cigarette tobacco, and a hint of peppermint. Good but it did not knock me off my socks. On the palate there is a very distinct stewed elderberry flavor but without the strong acidity. By grandmother used to make elderberry syrup whose taste I remember as being shockingly similar. The finish does not add any new notes but lingers on the palate quite long. Nose and palate have a British rum profile that reminds me of the El Dorado 15 except lighter. The 61.4% abv alcohol is well integrated into the whole package, which makes it is very drinkable. Though, it is definitely not an everyday sipper.

Overall, as my first rum from Trinidad, I quite liked it. I found it to be a bit too one-dimensional but still pleasant and different from the rest. I am glad I bought it to widen my rum spectrum.
