I have tasted this one during an event in Spa in Belgium and I have kept a good keepsake of it.
Promosso a pieni voti.

Velier bottles some of the best heavy rums, and though they are expensive, I still think the prices are within reason. The newly released vintage 1999 is bloody good, and in my book surpasses the earlier released 1996 vintage. It's "only" 53,1% vol, but distilled in a metal coffey still and then aged for 15 years in newly charred oak barrels, which have brought great complexity. This dense dark liquid, which have had an angel share of 72%, is just amasing and overall the whole rum feels better rounded then the previous diamonds.
The nose is a thing of beauty. It's very full, intense and rounded at the same time, with notes of ripe plums, charred wood, raisins and caramel. The composure almost has an omami like character to it. The palette is intense and opens with the newly charred wooden notes and ripe plum, followed by soft caramel, vanilla and a note actually reminiscent of flavourfull smoked and glaced ham, that hangs on for quite a while. Exceptional. (9,5)
