Bought this as a sipper. A little thin. Not smoky or pineappley. Didn’t want as pineappley as regular Stiggins fancy but this to me is weak flavored.
It is a light rum, a touch sweet too. The aroma is restrained (opens with water), though there is a clear sweet toasted fruit note. Taste is sweet and mildly spicy, and mouthfeel is full.
The smokiness and pineapple character come out when the rum is diluted or evaporated. It works well in simple mixes with ginger ale/beer, soda water, and cola. It could probably get used in a calculated way for cocktails.
Compared to other pineapple rums I've tried this tends to pack the pineapple punch all on its own. When used to add a dash of pineapple flavor to a drink in addition to another rum this works just fine though the pineapple flavor can get a bit lost in other stronger notes. I use it in a pineapple strawberry daiquiri and it has just enough pineapple to pop through the backend of the strawberry before giving way to the main rum being used (Plantation 3 Star in my case here).
Recipe for those who want it:
Pineapple Strawberry Daiquiri
1.5oz (45ml) Saison Pale Rum (Plantation 3 Star)
.5oz (15ml) Stiggins fancy (Plantation Pineapple)
3/4oz (22ml) Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
3/4oz (22ml) Simple Syrup (I used homemade 2:1 demerara simple)
1 Strawberry
Half Strawberry Garnish
I have to say that I like this Plantation quite a bit but I know better ones. There is definitely a whiskey tinge to it, as well as a small smoke flavor, but it remains a bit flat in my opinion. Pineapple does come out well, though but I miss the long aftertaste and that’s a pity. Lately I'm maybe used to some more exciting rums I'm afraid. Still, I didn't find it completely nasty so that's why I still give it a 7. Nice for in the cola.
Happy I found this one. It is a very unique rum. I wouldn't use it as a replacement in cocktails for your original Stiggins unless you are ready for a bit of smoke to light your fire. I enjoyed it neat. It also worked good mixed with Hamilton's Jamaican Pot Still Black in a Jungle Bird. Cheers!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

In the bottle purchased at Total Wine Burnsville MN. Looks and smells like regular Stiggins. The flavor has a much more balanced pineapple than reg stig. The smoke is not at all overwhelming and is best detected at the finish. A nice cloying drying smoke. A bit of black pepper is balance with the fruity sweetness. The perfect balance of flavors is the draw here. We’ll mixed.
