I really haven't taken the time to experiment with this rum relative to using it in cocktails, but it has great promise. To date, I've really only drunken it in small quantities (usually sipping from a shot glass or a single fingers worth in the an "on the rocks" glass. The characteristics are a solid rum with distinct notes of rich dark cacao. For what it is - it's very good. I typically serve it to friends in a broad tasting of rums. So unique I'll inevitably consume (drink/serve) a bottle or two a year.
Smooth and velvety in the mouth with little burn. The chocolate smell hits your nose while pouring into the glass. I first thought Hershey's syrup but then I get a tootsie roll. A lot of that. A plus for smoothness.
This is one that grows on you. It is lovely. It is a sneaky gateway to bring the woman in your life into Rum. I am going to use the Espresso Martini recipe in my own restaurant. It is that good and that different—a must-try.
If you love chocolate you will love this rum!
As stated elsewhere, I'm not a neat rum drinker. However mixed with coke or Dr Pepper, it tastes like a chocolate version of the same. Delicious.
I'm anxious to try this in hot chocolate or as a hot buttered chocolate rum once winter gets here.
I was hesitant to buy a bottle because 94% of all spiced or flavored rums are to sweet for my liking, but I like trying new things, (edit: not ALL new things) so I gave it a shot. Very smooth mouth and throat feel with a short burn on the finish. Excellent cacao flavor with light sweetness. Overall I'm very surprised about this one and will purchase again.
Thank you SelvaRey for not producing a Hershey bar in a bottle. This has real cacao taste and consistency. This is another very good product from a star distillery. For a flavored rum this is oiutstanding. You can taste the thought and craftsmanship that went into this. They did not want a sickly sweet candy rum. They wanted a superior cacao mixer. Well, mission accomplished. Bravo!
Take a fine-enough gold rum, dissolve an unholy amount of tootsie rolls in it, remove (most of) the sugar and any chemical taste. Ta da! It will never go toe-to-toe with any of my favorites, but it is a nice little treat!
You immediately get the aroma of chocolate in the air

I have only sipped this chocolate infused rum, but I can't wait to try it in a martini or flavoured coffees. It is the only flavoured rum I own but it's worth it. The rum flavour is overpowered but overall it is very nice.
Update 29/01/2020
I have revisited Selvarey and subtracted a point from my rating. It is still quite easy to sip but lacks the complex aged rum flavour that I now enjoy.
